Chapter 9: Serendipity
Michele hung up the phone with Kaitlyn and changed into her night shirt. She brushed her teeth and got into bed. She wasn't exactly tired so she took out the novel she had been reading. She didn't even read past the first paragraph when her phone rang. She glanced at her bedside clock. 1:30am!? Who was calling her at this time? She answered the phone and was both surprised and delighted to hear who it was. "Nick!"

"Did I wake you?" he asked, keeping his voice down.

"No, not at all. I couldn't sleep..." she said.

"Me neither... I can't stop thinking about you," Nick admitted.

"Me too..." agreed Michele. "I mean, it hasn't been that long but this is harder than we both thought it would be."

"I know... I pushed Jennifer away tonight... I didn't want to do anything if this situation was still up in the air. I couldn't have done that to her... my heart wouldn't have been in it," Nick told her.

"Oh Nick... as much as we say and try to keep things like it was before, we can't... not after tonight..." Michele said helplessly.

"I think I just need time to decide what to do... is that okay with you?" Nick asked tentatively.

"Yeah, I think that's fair."

"Michele, it'll all work out in the end... I promise."

"It's just the process I'm dreading," Michele worried. "Will the ends justify the means?"

Nick sighed. "It better... or we're all in for a roller coaster ride."

*************

"Do you really think it's that outrageous?" Kaitlyn replied, being careful not to slip up.

"Hello! Kaitlyn! This is Michele and NICK we're talking about," Orianne retorted.

"Yeah, that's true... that's a pretty far-out suspicion that Jen's got there," Kaitlyn laughed, trying to cover herself. She hated knowing a secret and not being able to tell anyone. The two girls chatted a little while longer before Orianne said she was tired and was going to go to bed. They said good night and hung up.

Kaitlyn leaned back in her desk chair. ‘Oh man... this is going to get complicated. And fast,' she thought.

***************

Meanwhile, Kevin and Alexandra had retired to bed. A.J. kissed Jamie good night and he watched as she drove off down the road. He closed and locked the door and went up the stairs to his room.

As he passed Nick's room, he could hear him speaking. A.J. couldn't help but hear a few words that leapt out at him. Such as "need time," "decide," and "Michele." A.J.'s eyes went wide and he went to his room. He didn't need to hear the rest of the conversation to realize what Nick was talking about. He wanted to tell someone but everyone was asleep by now. He contained himself and went to bed.

***************

"Hang on," Nick said into the phone. He thought he heard someone outside his door. He got out of bed, opened the door and checked. Nobody. "Hmm," he mumbled to himself. "Hey, I'm back," he said to Michele. "Guess I was just imagining it. Anyway, we better get some rest. I'm absolutely exhausted."

"Me too... I'm starting to get sleepy," she agreed.

"I just had to call and talk to you," Nick told her, he hesitated before he said, "I love you Michele."

Michele smiled, "I love you too Nick. Good night."
