James and Ty started talking and Michele gave Kaitlyn an approving look. “He’s cute...” Michele mouthed to her friend and Kaitlyn blushed.
All of a sudden, Kevin and the other four guys appeared at the front of the room and they all took a microphone.
“We’d like to thank everyone for attending this gala,” began Howie.
“Especially our girlfriends for organizing this huge event,” added Nick, subconsciously glancing over at Michele before smiling at Jen. Michele’s heart skipped a beat and she hoped no one else had noticed. Unfortunately, Jen had noticed but she gritted her teeth and let it go. For now.
“So as a little thank you, we want to sing for all of you...” Brian announced. The guys looked at each other for Kevin’s cue to start and they began the first verse of “All I Have To Give”, acapella style.
Jamie smiled at the sight of her boyfriend singing her favourite song. The guys finished singing and everyone applauded. “Just a second,” A.J. said into the
microphone as people started disbanding from the stage area to dance some more. They stopped and turned back to the front. The other guys looked at him, wondering
what he was doing. “As everyone knows, I have been dating Jamie for a long time now and having to go away on tour again has made me realize that I don’t want to
be away from her and live without her. With all that said, Jamie,” he turned to look at his girlfriend. “Will you marry me?” Jamie gasped and ran over to A.J. She kissed him as tears streamed down her face. “...will you...?” A.J. repeated, laughing nervously.
“Yes! Of course!” Jamie cried. The guests applauded and cheered while the guys congratulated the newly engaged couple.
Michele sighed and thought of how lucky Jamie was. She wanted that kind of love, that amazing feeling when you saw them. She was happy being with James but only
one person had given her that feeling. That rush of adrenaline. She glanced at Nick and Jen. Was he really perfectly happy with Jen? Michele couldn’t help but wonder how everything would be if her and Nick had agreed on the alternative choice. It might have been her that he was thanking on stage. It might have been her that he would propose his live to the next time. And yet she felt torn. She loved James as well. He was sweet, charming, good looking and, most of all, the didn’t have to hide their relationship. She glanced over at Nick’s direction and realized he was looking
at her, with the same look in his eyes. A look of longing and passion, wants and needs.
Nick caught Michele’s gaze and he could see that she was having the same feelings of desire mixed with regret as he was. He sighed as his mind argued with his heart. His mind told him Jen. His heart cried out for Michele. Nick was jarred from his thoughts when he noticed Michele head to the restrooms. He excused himself from Jen and dashed off after her. “Michele!” he called out.
Michele turned around, startled. “Nick! I... I was just going to fix my makeup,” she lamely lied.
Nick raised an eyebrow, not believing her. “Uh huh.”
“What?” she replied, cracking a smile. “I am!”
Nick suddenly turned serious. “Then, wait until after... I do... this,” he whispered as he pulled her in for a kiss. One that he had been waiting to give her for two long months.
Deception
