Chapter 5
I ran into the living room where JJ stood horror-stricken and staring at the door. I looked and standing on the other side was Mr. Smith himself. I didn’t know what to do and was scared to let him see me. He tried to break the door down but when that failed he broke the window next to the door and opened the door. He stepped inside and looked around. “Well, well, what a lovely house, too bad it won’t be here for much longer.” Then he looked around the room at every one as if he was planning out each and every one of our murders. Then he looked at me. “Well, we finally meet again, and in person this time. My, don’t you look lovely. Did you change your hair?”

“Leave me alone and get out of the house,” I said, trying not to sound scared.

“Why? Don’t you want to chat a while?”

“No, I told you four and a half years ago to leave me alone, and you wouldn’t give up. That’s why daddy called the cops!”

“Oh really, well we don’t have to worry about them right now. Oh, now where is that pretty-boy boyfriend of yours?” he asked looking around.

“Leave Nick alone! If you hurt a hair on his body you will wish you had never met me!”

“Ha, a threat! I’m so scared. Now come on Bethany, what does he have that I don’t?”

“Me,” I said looking him straight in the face.

“Well, we’ll just have to see about that.” At that moment he pulled out a knife and said “So, who wants to be first?” We all stood there staring at the knife. “Well? I’m waiting.”

“I do,” I said.

“You? Why you?”

“Because the guys would be missed far more than me, and I’d rather die than live without Nick and marry you!”

“Bethany, you don’t have to do this,” Nick said taking me in his arms.

“I know, but I love you and if this is what I have to do, then I’m willing to sacrifice my life.”

“Aww! How touching. That just makes me sick; how could you want HIM over me?”

“First of all, you’re twenty-seven years older than me, you’re already married, and I’m in love with Nick, not you!”

“Well, not anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“The wife is dead; I killed her last week.”

“Oh my! But what about Sara and Scott?”

“Oh, they’re on their own right now. They don’t need me.”

“How could you?”

“Do what?”

“Kill your wife and think that after four and a half years, I’ll give up my wonderful life as I know it and marry you?”

“Because you know you love me.”

“Love you?! I hate you! I never loved you; I don’t love you, and I never will love you! I love Nick, and there’s nothing you can do to change that!”

“Fine, play hard to get. I’ve always liked a challenge. I’m leaving, but I’ll be back before you know it!” He turned and walked out the door.

“That guy is creepy!” JJ said.

“I know, I know,” I said shaking.

Nick took me in his arms and said, “Bethany, I wont let him hurt you. I promise. I care about you too much.”

“Thanks Nick, but I don’t want anyone to get hurt. I think we need to show him that I love you and that we’re in love and there’s nothing that he can do to change that. I know he wants me to be happy, but I think that he thinks the only way that I’ll ever be truly happy is with him.”

“Well, he knows we love each other, so shouldn’t that be enough?”

“Yeah, but it’s not, and I’m not sure why.”
