| Chapter 6 | |||||||
| Later that night, Nick and I were sitting on his couch talking about the strange events of the afternoon. We weren’t sure of how exactly to make the point clear to Sam that Nick and I were in love and had no intention of breaking up. “Well, I’m out of ideas, so let’s go to bed and worry about it in the morning,” I said yawning. “Oh ok, well I guess that’s as good a plan as any.” We got up and got ready for bed. We were just about to get in bed when the phone rang. “Who would call us at 10:15 at night?” Nick asked. He answered into the phone, “Hello?” “Hey Nick, this is Brian. I just called to make sure you and Bethany were ok.” “Yeah, we’re fine. Why?” “Um you mean you haven’t heard?” “Heard what?” “Oh no, well turn on the TV, any news station.” “Ok, hold on.” He reached for the remote on the table beside the bed and turned the TV on. Announcer: “Man murders local woman in the name of love when the channel 8 news returns.” “Oh no!” I said. “See what I mean: it’s all over the news! Every station is covering it. Apparently, he went on a rampage and took his anger out on a gas station clerk,” Brian said. “Oh Nicky, I’m so scared!” “Don’t worry, Bethy. I won’t let him hurt you.” “Oh guys, I hate to break up this lovely conversation, but I really have to be going.” “Ok, bye man!” Nick said hanging up. “Nick, this is really starting to scare me,” I said. “Hey, it’s back on.” Announcer: “And now the latest development in this bizarre story. We now have Linda Jones reporting live from the scene. Linda what’s it like out over there?” “Well, Bob, it’s quite a scene, as the police search for the man that killed the convenience store clerk Mandy Burton tonight in cold blood and wrote ‘I’ll never give up’ in her blood on the side of the store. The police have no leads in this case at the moment, but do know that the suspect is apparently in love with a woman that refuses to love him back. Reporting live from the Circle K gas station, I’m Linda Jones.” “Thanks Linda, and if anyone has any information on this case call the sheriff at 1-800-459-7865.” Nick turned off the TV. “Nick, do you think we should call the cops?” “Yeah, I do.” I picked up the phone and dialed the number for the hotline. “Hello, Sergeant Bill Jones speaking, how may I help you?” “Hi, I have some information about the case of the guy killing the convenience store clerk.” “Ok, what’s your name?” “Um, Bethany Collins.” “Ok, Miss Collins, what do you know?” “Well, I know who it is. Well, it’s a long story, but I’m the one he loves, and his name is Sam Smith.” “Ok, do you mind coming down to the station for questioning?” “I guess not, I’ll be down in 15 minutes.” “Thanks ma’am. We’re really sorry to bother you so late at night.” “Oh, it’s no problem. The quicker he’s behind bars, the quicker I sleep.” “Ok, see you soon.” We hung up. “We’re going down to the station,” I said getting out of bed. “Ok, just put shorts on and let’s go.” We changed and headed for the station. Then ten minutes later, we arrived and found the sergeant that I had spoken to. He walked up to us. “Hi, you must be Bethany?” “Yeah, that’s me. This is my boyfriend, Nick.” “Hey, aren’t you...?” “Yeah,” Nick said, “but let’s not worry about who I am right now?.” “Oh, I’m sorry. So, you say this man is in love with you?” “Yeah, it’s like this. . .” I told him the whole story, about the obsession, the fire, everything. When I was done I could tell that he felt sorry for me. “Wow, that does sound bad, so can you describe him for me?” “Well, he’s about forty-five, about 135lbs, with balding gray hair, about 5’8”, medium build, a mustache, and glasses.” “Ok, what else do you know about him? Anything will help.” “Well, unless he sold it, he drives a white Chevy Cavalier. He used to smoke, but I’m not sure if he still does. He has two children, Sara and Scott. He killed his wife last week, and he has my initials tattooed on his left arm.” “Ok, thanks, you have been a huge help. We really appreciate you coming out so late. We’ll put guards outside the house gates and keep watch if he comes back.” “Ok, and if he calls or anything, I’ll let you know.” “Ok, and thanks again!” We walked outside and headed towards Nick’s. When we got there we quickly changed and got into bed. It was now 11:30pm. |
