Chapter 2: Face-To-Face
Shrieks rose from the crowd. Not just Jenny's friends, but girls from behind and some from in front of the group screamed with excitement. Many of them couldn't even see the Boys from where they were, but shouted at the sound of one of the Boys' names anyway.

Many girls started shouting the names of their favorite Boys after that. Rachael joined them with a challenge, "Nick is mine and all mine!!"

Hearing Rachael, Laura joined in with her own shout, "Brian belongs to meeeee!" More such shouts started.

Jenny wasn't interested in screaming her lungs out and decided to cover her ears instead. After a while, the majority of the yells died down, including her friends', except for Colleen and Laura who were fighting and screaming something about Brian's pajama bottoms. Though their argument persisted, Jenny thought it safe to let go of her ears. She had spent the duration of the screams looking down in acute pain. Now she looked forward in horror. Only about ten people stood between her and the five males, whom she was positive were very sure of themselves and wouldn't care if they hurt her or her feelings.

Panicking, Jenny looked for her friends, but saw them nowhere up the line. She glanced behind her shoulder to spot her entire group of friends smiling wickedly at her. Turning fully around, Jenny stared at them, expecting an explanation. No one seemed to want to give one. She started to tap her foot impatiently.

"What are you guys doing? What's going on here?" she demanded, though her voice held no threat. Still too slow to understand what was going on, Jenny shrugged it off, and decided to tell a joke. "Anyone up for a joke?"

They all immediately began shouting their favorite jokes of hers. She smiled and laughed silently to herself. Through all the yelling, she kept hearing the names of three of her favorite jokes over and over again. Jenny held up her hand for silence.

"You have three choices. 'The Holy Water' joke, 'The Nun and the Busdriver' joke, or 'The Ghost' joke. What is it to be?" she asked calmly.

A brief moment of silence gave way to a final shout for "'The Ghost' joke!" Delighted, for this was a great joke to keep her mind off of her present predicament, Jenny rubbed her hands together and decided on the best way to start the tale.

"Well, in this small town out in Kansas, the citizens were all such good friends. One Sunday, the widow, Ms. Hiltey, went up to the church's pastor before the morning service, feeling she knew him well enough to discuss a personal issue with him.

"'Pastor? Lately, I think I have been seeing my husband's ghost at night. Each time he comes to me, he makes it clear, even without speech, that he wants to have...' the lady gulps, '...sex with me. What should I do? Wouldn't that be against the church or something?' The pastor thinks this over and tells the widow that her questions will be answered either during the service or after it. She nods and takes her seat."

With Jenny's loud voice, the joke reached the Boys' table, where they tried their best to keep their attention on the girl in front of them now. Words of the joke kept drifting over to each of them and distracting them. Every time they had returned their attention to the giddy girl at the table holding out her CDs to be autographed, something else Jenny said caught their attention again. AJ's mind couldn't leave the joke as soon as he heard the word "sex".

"So the pastor starts the morning prayers and soon comes to the day's topic: The Afterlife.

"'By a show of hands, how many of you believe you have seen a ghost before?' About one third of the people raise their hands. ‘All right. Now let me ask you this. How many of you believe you have had sexual intercourse with a ghost?' All the hands go down. Slowly, however, one hand in the back starts to rise again. Staring around himself, the timid man looks at the pastor, waiting to hear what he will say.

"'Berny? You mean to say to this church that you have undergone sexual intercourse--sex--with a member of the afterlife--a ghost!?' the pastor asks with the most incredulous expression."

Each Backstreet Boy became silent in anticipation of the punchline, as did each of Jenny's friends.

"'OH! With a ghost? Oh, no, no, no; never! I thought you said GOAT!'"

Whoops of laughter rose from the crowd around Jenny as well as from the Boys behind her. Surprised at the noise coming from behind, Jenny whirled around and blushed crimson with embarrassment and anger. She was right in front of the Boys' table now.
So THIS was their plan! Get me trapped so that I have to talk with them! I should have realized they would do something like this!!

Jenny suddenly realized that the Boys were smiling, not frowning. Jake used to smile, so had her father. She wouldn't trust THEIR smiles anymore. Why should she trust the smiles of these guys? Then she noticed that the lighter haired of the two blondes was about ready to burst in laughter.
What's so funny? she wondered.

She stared at that same one for a long time, trying to remember what his name was. She had heard it before, but couldn't think of what it is. Unaware of what she was doing, Jenny's concentration turned into a look of pain and disgust. Mistaking Nick as the reason for her expression, Brian started cracking up and clapped Nick on shoulder.

"Wow, Nick! You really got the talent to repel 'em!" he laughed.

Nick! His name is Nick! Why couldn't I remember? And why do I care? Jenny thought, coming out of her daydream. When Brian's remark registered in her mind, her cheeks burned brightly in unison with Nick's. Recovering from her embarrassment immediately, Jenny let her anger and her violent nature take over.

"You do just as good of a job!" she snapped, glaring at Brian with her hands placed defiantly on her hips. It was obvious he was quite surprised, and soon Brian joined in with Nick's stunned blushing. Now it was AJ's, Kevin's, ad Howie's turn to laugh. Jenny sharply glared at each of them and then returned her attention to Nick.
He's kinda cute. He has nice eyes, and nice hair...

Infuriated with herself for such foolish thoughts, Jenny scowled again. Nick's blush deepened.

"Next time a girl comes up to you, tell your friend here to keep his mouth shut!" she advised Nick. He just sat there dumbfounded and staring at her. Jenny started to walk away, but then felt someone grab her arm. Turning her head back, she stared in fright at the hand of the man that was holding her arm.
Is he going to hit me now?

AJ looked at her strangely when she visibly winced at his touch.

Her eyes moved up to his, and she put her full gaze upon AJ. That’s when he noticed her eyes. They were an unusual mix of gray, green, and blue. The man actually started blushing along with his friends. Jenny rolled her eyes annoyedly and impatiently.
Why am I suddenly not afraid anymore? I would think I would want to cower, but instead I just want to yell back at him!  And at the same time I have the sudden urge to get very far away from here. And fast.

"Uh, don't you want an autograph?" he asked, almost timidly.

"Not really." Her words were a slap in his face as she jerked her arm from his hold and smiled, one with a mix of sweetness and bitterness. She left the table and five very confused Backstreet Boys behind her. She felt just as confused at her own actions as they had been.
