These gauges are available in O__OO/On3__Sn3__HO__HOn3__N scales directly from the NMRA and HO from better hobby shops. They provide a means for checking most of the important standards that are critical for trouble free operation. The two versions shown differ only in the contour and depths of the gauging notches on the left. Full in depth instructions are provided, covering each of the standards. The outside shape is a general, minimum clearance form, based on prototype patterns. It does not include allowances for sharp radii, extra long equipment or articulated loco boiler front swing. The top and bottom extensions check track work clearances and are particularly useful on turnouts. Even the best, (Shinohara) occasionally have problems. The notch, at the upper left. checks minimum tire width. If it enters the notch, it will probably drop into flange-ways at frogs. The remaining 2 notches gauge wheels, the flanges of which must easily fit in the notches. This is indispensable when mounting wheels. It is wise to check any troublesome rolling stock. Over the years many Athearn locos were discovered with out of gauge drivers. ![]() Original for use with with pre RP-25 wheels. Very useful for gauging and checking older locomotive drivers. ![]() Mark II version for RP-25 wheels.
