Return of the Jedi was once my favourite of the Star trilogy but it has now been replaced by The Empire Strikes Back for reasons that I have already explained in the Empire Strikes Back review. To many, Jedi is the weaker of the three Star wars films and often comes in for critisism, this critisism is mainly aimed at George Lucas because of his introduction of the Ewoks. People said that he sold out and made a film for kids, and that after the more serious and dark script that Empire Strikes Back had they were expecting similar from Jedi, but when they didn't get this they pissed and moaned. Now if Lucas's aim was to make a movie for kids (he obviously wanted it to appeal to as wide an age group as possible) he definitely succeeded, because I don't know about you, but the reason that I liked Jedi so much when I was younger was because of the Ewoks, and even watching it last night the Ewoks were pretty good, although the fact that they were able to take out hundreds of Imperial troops and armoured vehicles when all they had were soil bombs was prehaps a bit far fetched even for something as far fetched as Star Wars, but it was still good to watch. As in all the Star Wars movies it had many bad points but there are so many things to enjoy about the movie that you can't help but rate it highly and Jedi was a suitable ending to the trilogy. You get to meet the emperor, see Darth Vader without his helmet on, Luke finds out Leia is his sister, the start at Jaba's palace is excellent and Luke and Vader have a big lightsaber fight which leads to Vader throwing the emperor to his death. Jedi completes the Star Wars story superbly, it carries on from the first two and concludes the trilogy but there is still room for new revelations and excitment along the way. Jedi is in my opinion the weaker of the three movies but in no way is it a weak film. |
