There isn't much that hasn't been said about Star Wars so I won't bother writing it all again, and if you need the plot summarising then you are a complete loser, I'll just pick up on some points that we noticed whilst watching it for the first time in years yesterday.
Mark Hamill - When I was a wee lad I couldn't understand why Mark Hamill hadn't been in anything of note since Return Of The Jedi and now I have realised that it is because he's not a very good actor. He was good for a laugh in Star Wars, sounding like a camp ten year old child for a lot of the time when he started that whining brat voice. This was not as noticeable in the next two but here it is virtually everytime he opens his destined-to-be-a-Jedi mouth.
But alas, this movie is not really about the acting, but then again would it have been the same without Alec Guinness or Harrison Ford - I think not. What the movie is about is the non-stop action and the story that is told from the first to last scene. It is never boring and if you don't believe me watch the bits where they are in the Death Star for proof - they rescue Leia and as soon as they have done they are set upon by a load of Stormtroopers and have to go into the garbage shoot, then a minute later Luke is attacked by a snake, a minute later they are almost crushed, a minute later they are swinging across massive chasms and Han and Chewie are being chased all over the damn place, a minute later Obi-Wan and Vader meet and chat about the good old days, a minute later they are away from the Death Star and home free, but a minute later they are attacked by fighters, and then of course there is the smart ending, proof enough I think.
But is it the film that we all remember from when we were seven years old? There are many flaws to Star Wars but they are always conveniently overlooked or the film itself overrides them and they are simply not noticed. They are even more noticeable when you re-watch the films years after you first saw them which when you are that age you think that most things that you see in the movies look fairly believable anyway. For example, you didn't notice that a lot of the acting sucks and there is the dialogue to match. You also didn't notice how ridiculous Harrison Ford looks when Han Solo and Luke are going there separate ways before the big battle at the end and he says to Luke "Hey Luke, May the force be with you." It even looked as though he was about to start laughing before actually said the dreaded line. I could actually begin to understand where Alec Guinness was coming from and why he hated being seen by people from "the Star Wars generation" as Obi-Wan Kenobi, no wonder he killed himself. When you are seven you also failed to notice that George Lucas pretty much sucks as a director and it isn't surprising that the acting gets critisised when they have a script like that to work with.
I have tried to give a balanced argument here because - and you may not want to believe this, but there are plenty of people who can't see what all the fuss is about, but if you first saw Star Wars when you were young, I think the impression of it that you got on this first immature viewing stays with you everytime you subsequently watch it and the excitment that the film creates with all the action, monsters, memorable lines and unforgettable images overshadows the bad points so much that they are almost unnoticeable.
