St.
Francis Xavier Cabrini High School was built in the 1960's and officially
opened in November, 1968. Curling had at that time an adequate
primary and and elementary school with the Sacred Heart School but there
was need for a girls high school. Through the efforts of Msgr.
Stoyles and with the support of the laity in the area plans for our new
school were set in place.
Upon
completion Cabrini began serving the school communities of Curling as well
as those of Halfway Point, Benoit's Cove, and Frenchmen's Cove until the
implementation of a co-educational system in September 1982. Prior
to this Cabrini was an all girls high school. We said goodbye to our
friends who had been for so long a part of our school life and welcomed
new ones. The boys who were previously enrolled at Regina High
School and other schools throughout the city were now a part of ours, and
ours, theirs.
Through
the years the students of Cabrini won numerous awards and attained great
achievements. In Cabrini's successful participation in the annual
speak-offs, sponsored by both the Lion's and Columbus Clubs from 1968 to
1982, Cabrini speakers came first seven times in fourteen years. The Glee
Club dominated the Rotary Music Festivals from 1970 to 1979, winning first
place at the Provincial Choir in 1977. The Drama Club's success in
the City Drama Festival won them the trophy in 1975 and 1976. The
Cabrini Super Stars captured the All Newfoundland Girls Volleyball
Championships twice, in 1974 and 1977. The Thunderbolts, another
senior team, took the all city and regional Volleyball Championships from
1978 to 1980. The years proceeding this saw the Cabrini boys and
girls excel and win championships in various sports including basketball,
volleyball and softball but unfortunately they cannot be documented here
due to the unavailability of that information. I'm hoping some of
you will help in retrieving them and other scholastic awards so that it
may be included here among the school's achievements.
The
average annual enrollment of students at Cabrini High hovered between
225-250. To accomodate the students and to facilitate the need for
extra courses, renovations were made in the summer of 82 for a new science
laboratory, home economics lab, and woodworking area. Cabrini had
found itself as modernized as any of the newer schools in the Corner Brook
area and offered its students a chance for more opportunities to advance
in their future careers. But this would not be possible without the
teachers of Cabrini who guided us through our studies and lent support
when it was needed. ...They were the foundation.
In 1991 we saw
the end of an era and the doors to its physical foundation closed
forever. No longer are there sounds of bells ringing to signal the
start and end of class, or the sound of lockers clanging open and shut,
the happy chatter of conversations among students, or teachers' voices
echoing through the classrooms. There is no more except the
foundation on which all memories fall. A certain friend, teacher, a
single event, a new book, may help us recall.
