Jessie and Cassidy are mortal enemies. They cannot stand each other. Right? Maybe, maybe not. They certainly have a history. In The Breeding Centre Secret, Cassidy commented it had 'been a while' since they'd last met. When James probed Jessie for information on the long haired blonde she seemed reluctant to talk about it and commented crossly, "she used to hang around with me", claiming Cassidy was jealous because she was 'so beautiful'.

No further comment about them knowing each other was passed until Jessie and James tunnelled their way out of prison. "We shouldn't have tried to steal from that friend of yours," James had said. "She's no friend of mine," Jessie replied angrilly.

And so Cassidy was forgotten until Meowth had a funny turn in the Orange Islands and Jessie found herself once more face to face with her old 'aquaintence'. "Our old friends," Butch and Cassidy announced in unison. Jessie seemed horrified as she cried Cassidy's name and the two ended up face-to-face as the battle of mottos began.

As the episode reached its climax, Cassidy said, "We still have a score to settle,
don't we, Jessie?" and Jessie smiled to herself as she said, "some people don't know when to quit." It is with smugness that Jessie watched Cassidy and her partner carted off to prison in the end.

So what's the story with those two? There are three theories I've heard of, one I believe strongly and two I dismiss.

Theory 1:
Just Good Friends

Jessie and Cassidy were best friends, either during their early days in Team Rocket or some time before that. Each vain and self-important, their friendship collapsed amid jealousy and a battle for supremacy.

Theory 2:
Keep It In The Family

Although a rare theory, I have discovered that some people believe Jessie and Cassidy are in fact sisters. They argue there is a family resemblance, but then that could be said for James and Butch, too. One reason this theory started is because some publicity called Butch and Cassidy's team 'Big Sister Team Rocket'.

Theory 3:
Love Is In The Air

This is the theory I subscribe to ~ the idea that Jessie and Cassidy were, in fact, lovers. They had a relationship many years ago and Jessie was most likely the one who broke it off. While Cassidy finds herself able to remind Jessie that they have a history, Jessie tries to ignore it and push it out her mind as much as possible. But the sexual tension is still there.....
