Editorial

Dear Members of CFC,

In August 2000, Yahoo acquired EGroups. It is Yahoo's goal to fully merge Yahoo! Clubs with eGroups into something called Yahoo! Groups. As a member of eGroups and Yahoo! Clubs, I feel they should have left things alone. As the saying goes: "if it ain't broke don't fix it!" However, having said that, we must recognize that the merger is inevitable. And, too, it is to be remembered that, at one point in time, Yahoo! Clubs were new to us as well; things that are now familiar once seemed confusing and arbitrary. I am sure that the merger will bring both good and bad things with it. Until we fully know and understand all the features available in the new Yahoo! Groups, it seems silly to frame the merger as a bad thing only.

Yet, there are those who will look upon this merger as an evil meddling with our tidy world. Indeed, there is at least one group of Yahoo! club founders who are very much against this merger. They feel that promises by Yahoo! officials, that the clubs would maintain their feeling of community, have been broken. It is their belief that this vision of Yahoo! Groups not only contradicted everything club founders had been told, but also is nothing like what club founders wanted or felt necessary when asked to suggest new features. If you are of this same opinion, then I strongly suggest you join this group, located at The Last Line (http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thelastline). In their own words: "In essence, Yahoo just placed their logo on the cold, cluttered and sterile eGroups interface, which was basically a front-end for an advanced mailing list." If Yahoo is to be convinced that this merger should NOT take place, it will take a strong grass-roots level of support from both Yahoo! Clubs and eGroup members.

However, as we said above, the merger appears to be inevitable. Regardless of how you feel about it--be it positive, negative, or neutral like myself--it WILL affect you whether you are a member of either Yahoo! Clubs or eGroups, and, therefore, it behooves you to learn more about it. It will be no ones fault but your own, if you wake up one day to the merger is fully finalized and a new interface before you that you are totally unprepared to use. My advice: before it is too late, get out there and learn what will happen!

This Month In The News

The United States has its 43rd President. George W. Bush was inaugurated as the United States 43rd President on January 7th. After many vigorously blocked attempts at recount in the state of Florida, the election finally was conceded, awarding Mr. Bush the necessary electoral college votes to claim victory. At the inauguration, there were many protesters, showing that the new president is not well liked.

AOL/Time Warner Merger. AOL (America OnLine) and Time-Warner merged this month, thus becoming the largest merger ever. Some observers question why the AOL/Time-Warner merger was allowed to go forward, particularly in light of last year's court ordered break up Microsoft.

Baltimore Ravens Vs. New York Giants Super Bowl On Sunday, January 28th, the Super Bowl took place in Tampa, Florida. The game featured a great half-time show with performances by many known singers including: Aerosmith, N*Sync, Britney Spears, Nelly, and others. However, it was the contest of two great football teams that the event was about. The Ravens' great defense by allowed only one Giants touchdown. With five turn overs, the final score was Ravens 34, Giants 7 (and no need for a recount there).

Sean Puffy Combs' Trial Begins On Monday, January 29th, Puffy Combs trial began in a New York superior court. It has been alleged that Puffy instigated a shoot out in the Manhattan nightclub, Club NY in December of 1999, when he pulled out a handgun and shot at the ceiling after being insulted by another club patron. The Rap artist/recording producer has been charged on weapons possesion and attempted bribery of a witness in connection with the incident that left three people injured. His protégé, Jamal "Shyne" Barrow faces three counts of attempted murder in the same incident. Puffy's girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez (Actress/Singer/Dancer) broke up with him recently in, how I see it, attempting to remove herself from involvement with the trial.

Scheduled Chat

Over the next twelve (12) weeks (have you noticed yet that I am counting down?), we expect to have several chat sessions as the new Yahoo! Groups features come on-line. We're pretty sure it will not be one per week--that would interfere too much with chat sessions in your clubs. And, right now, because Yahoo! has not been forthcoming with anything approaching a time table, it is difficult to predict when they will be. They will definitely be as required and a notice of our intention to hold a chat session will be posted to the CFC message board and sent out with at least 24-hour notice in founder mail. These will definitely be Q&A sessions as well as an opportunity to complain.

BTW, if an issue arises where you feel a chat with fellow founders is necessary or desirable, you can contact us via e-mail and suggest a topic and time. Please write: CFC_Founders@yahoo.com and include your Member ID name and information on the topic you would like to discuss.

Groups product, what features we may expect to continue, how it will impact clubs, and our feelings about these changes. But, I think most in attendence will say that we mostly had fun.

Thread Digest

The term "thread" comes from the days of EBBs and Usenet/Newsnet. It refers to a series of posts, which may or may not be on topic but begin with the same subject heading. "Re:" on our message board can either be taken as "regarding" or "replying to," for example. Pointing to the beginning of a thread, you can sometimes gleen important bits of discussion pro and con on an issue, allowing you to make a more informed decision. We use the term a little more loosely in Yahoo! clubs, where a response can often be as much off topic as on.

The main concern of this digest is to point to beginnings of threads or significant entries concerning them or important postings that you might want to visit again. We do not bring you the entire post--a complete repost would take far too much space. However, we do offer the entry number, the subject line, name of member posting, date, some overview of the content, and a list of related posts (if any) over a 30 day period (+/-) in the listing below.
