Programming in Visual C++

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miscrosft Visual Studio 97

At the National University of Singapore, loads of importance is given to the practical aspects of the industry. If following with this, all engineering students need to work for the Industry for one whole semester (In fact more than that. The entire training period is all of 24 weeks long.). During this semester (normally the second semester of the third year) the students needn't attend their classes at the university. Instead, they work as paid trainees in the many companies in Singapore and overseas as well. The experience gained is invaluable and it prepares the students both, mentally and physically, for the industry and opens up the vast oppertunities that lie ahead.

During Jan-Jun 1998, I did my Industrial Attachment programme at Hewlett Packard Pte. Ltd. (Singapore). I was at the Singapore Components operations(SCO) Wafer Fab. Obviously, the place had a lot to offer to a budding Electronics and Computer Engineer like me. At first I was slightly lost because the wafer fab was a place which needed a lot of microelectronics engineers. But pretty soon I had discovered my newest love and from then on, it was smooth sailing (or shall we say smooth 'wafering'!).

Visual C++ at first seemed like a Goliath and I was not even a David. Unlike David, I have not won over Goliath (Visual C++), instead I am trying to make it my friend. Its kinda fun to program in the environment and although the handles, device contexts, classes and their heirarchies have spun a really viscious net, but somehow the online help is so cool that it doesn't really make me feel far from home. I have had some really frustrating times with this, when I have sat hours staring at the monitor, looking at seemingly endless lines of code and trying to figure out what exactly is going wrong. But in the end it all pays off when you see the application run and your friends crowd around you to use it too.

Anyway, I guess you are not here to find out the story of David and Goliath. So here are two applications that I developed in course of learning the 'Goliath'. Both of these run on Windows 95 or above, so if you are using any other system, dont bother downloading. They are simple applications really, but I still maintain that they are fun to use. And keep a lookout at this space, some even cooler applications are coming up real soon.

And Please don't worry.. There are NO viruses here!!

[Icon]Application 1: Tic Tac Toe. The classical game. Try beating the expert level. And if you succeed....I dunno....you need to be quite something for that because the expert level has not been programmed to loose.

[Icon]Application 2: Word Power. This is a game of pure logic that tests your reasoning powers as well as vocalubary. And it has a user managable dictionary of words as well as its own in-built repetoire of brain teasers for even the smartest of all brains.

[Icon]Application 3: Type Tutor. This teaches you to type faster than ever before.. and whats more.. it gives new dimension to the term " Learning Can Be Fun!".

[Icon]Application 4: JigSaw. This is a JigSaw puzzle witha difference. It has 4 different pictures that you can choose from (at different levels of difficulty) and you need to reconstruct thet complete picture by moving the various blocks into the vacant block.
