| I'm sure EVERYONE already heard about the Pennsylvania Britney Spears Radio Stunt... WELL, I have to admit this... This one was within driving distance of my house. YEP, and it was from my FAVORITE radio station, 97BHT, good old BHT... I must admit, I thought it was funny, really funny. And the way they pulled it off was just classic. I'll be telling my kids about this one when they fall for Justin Timberlake's kid. Either way, here's the article I got from VH1's The Wire on 6.29.00. I find it very informativc. BRITNEY HOAX SYNDROME: OOPS....A DJ DID IT AGAIN By C. Bottomley We're barely a few days into summer, and already the heat seems to be going to several DJs' heads. This month's trend is the Imitation Britney Spears. Two weeks after a woman died from a heart attack upon seeing one New York radio station's Britney Spears impersonator, a Pennsylvania station tried the same stunt. This time there were no deaths. Just disappointment. And some thrown bottles. DJ Bill Fox told his listeners that Britney would be coming to Wilkes-Barre's WBHT-FM station. By the time a large limousine pulled up to the studio, a crowd of 400 kids and their parents had gathered outside. But instead of seeing the pert Oops…I Did It Again hit-maker emerge from the limo, it was only Fox, clad in a tuxedo. He wasn't alone. Fox was carrying a Britney Spears doll. According to one parent, he told the crowd, "See, I told you she was a real doll to work with." There is no truth to the rumor that Fox writes gags for VH1.com in his spare time. The crowd expressed their disapproval by throwing bottles and other debris. One girl was struck by a bottle aimed (badly) at Fox. She was not seriously injured, but her mother Michelle Brady claimed "My five year-old daughter's heart was broken." In his defense, Fox told the Associated Press that his listeners should have been able to "read between the lines." We have a feeling they'll be tuning into another radio station before they learn to read. Try out WFMU, kids. It's a gas. On June 13, a woman died of a heart attack after seeing someone purporting to be Britney Spears emerge from the studios of Binghamton, NY's WMRV-FM. A DJ performed an interview with the impersonator, pretending she was the real deal. When the impersonator left the building, a 37 year-old woman among the 100-strong crowd hoping for a peep of the teen collapsed. Dotmusic.com also reports that Britney Spears isn't going to appear on Dawson's Creek anytime soon. Although two cameo appearances were scheduled and it was reported that Spears had signed a contract with Columbia TriStar Television, dotmusic.com claims Britney has pulled out of the show. Apparently the Dawson's cast members are delighted. "We did know about this contract and all I can tell you is that it isn't on the boards anymore," a TriStar spokeswoman told Dotmusic. "It is definitely not scheduled to happen. I don't really think it is likely to happen now but I can't tell you why." I must say, BHT had been promoting this little "meeting" for about four days prior to the actual day. Somehow I knew that this would be yet another of BHT's Practical Jokes. I know people that went to the station in search of Britney, and I tried to tell them not to go, to no avail. Did it not occur to these people that Britney had back-to-back shows scheduled for her tour and would NOT arrive in Northeast PA until the day of her Montage Mountain concert on 6.25? And the next day she would be in NYC. The day they pulled this stunt was 6.23, the Friday before. You'd think some of these fans would realize that Britney is a busy person and she doesn't have time to hang out at a tiny little radio station with unimportant DJs... But who knows? Oh well, maybe next time not so many people would show up. Let this be a lesson to all of us. Don't go to a radio station when they say someone famous is gonna be there without checking the person's website or calling someone important to check first. Cause if you do, you might just get hit in the head with a bottle. |
