Aah!  The Big Cats.  Everyone wants to see them.

If you see a leopard in broad daylight, you can consider yourself extremely lucky!  They are nocturnal animals and seeing one like this was a blessing!

Leopard

And lions... well, they might not be the actual king of the jungle, but they certainly look like one!

King of the Jungle

We saw many lions and never got tired of them.  We found them amazing and beautiful every single time.

Don Juan - Click to enlargeThis is "Don Juan", of one of the Moremi Reserve prides.  He is an older male whom we heard roaring every night outside our camp.

Nothing can describe the feeling of sleeping so close to these magnificent animals.  Never mind the inconvenience of not being able to go to the restroom at night!  Every night, the lions' roaring reassured me that everything is still fine on our planet.

Lionesses - Click to enlargeLionesses are actually the "Queens of the Jungle".  They are in control. They do the hunting to feed their king and the entire family.

The young ones, after a good meal, drink water.

Or dance a little!

We were unable to find a cheetah this time, but I got cheetah'd out in March of 2001, when I worked as a volunteer for two weekas at the Cheetah Conservation Fund web page --click on the link or on the cheetah below to go there.

You can read my story "Working with Cheetahs" and see lots of pictures at my Cheetah Photo Gallery.
