You enter a dark room. The only light, candles, dimly illuminate a large and cavernous space. Vague, shadowy forms move outside of your vision. They might be priests, they might be pilgrims like youself, they might be demons. Before you is an altar decorated in red and gold. Hanging above this carefully tended shrine is a picture, a picture of a person you know very well indeed... for this is the Temple of Joss Whedon.Welcome to the Altar of the Great Tripping One.![]() ![]()
But who is this man, elvated to Godhood by his crazy but overwhelmingly popular creations? Well, he was born in 1965, and even while he was growing up he was always interested in horror shows, superheroes and twisted things. These would later come back to haunt him. There is, of course, a great deal more to tell about the Great Tripping One, but none of us really want to hear it. The important thing is: Joss conceived the idea of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from a stereotype in all of the old horror films in which a beautiful blonde girl would go into an alley and perish gruesomely at the hands of whatever dark horror lurked there. He thought it was rather unfair... so he began an oddesey devoted solely to creating a blonde beauty of a character who could walk into that dark alley, and not only be aware of the vampire, but soundly kick its ass. Thus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was born. He first wrote the script of the Buffy movie in 1992, and it had a grand turnout of five people in the theater. The show, which began in '97, was much more of a hit, and so it continues today. It has attracted many viewers, including is a large online community. Among this brotherhood of devotees it is commonly accepted philosophy that a) Joss Whedon is GOD and b) he gets his ideas on his various acid flights. This temple is devoted to this philosophy. The devotees are fans like myself, who have passed the point of angry streams of profanity, denial, and hysterical threats of physical violence to the point of peaceful resignation. To find acceptance with your own relationship with the show, and your mixed emotions towards Joss, you must accept the truth of him as a minor diety; not always kindly, but omnipotent, and unmoved by anything we say or do. ![]() From the Mouth (Or Pen) of The Great Tripping One:On High School: "The series is based on the idea that high school is the most horrifying experience a human can go through." On Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "We take our horror genre seriously. This is not ?Clueless? or ?Party Girl.? The description I like best is ?My So-Called Life? meets ?The X-Files.? Basically, ?Buffy? has all the classic, very cool monsters: vampires, werewolves, mummies. She is a good role model, for not just girls but for everybody, because she has to use her wits and her physical strength to win... yet, she still has to get high marks in all her courses at school." On Cordelia & Xander: "They haben der big smootchen." On Buffy & Angel: "Buffy loves Angel. Angel loves Buffy. And I love Ho-hos." That doesn't mean they can be together always... On the upcoming "Angel" spinoff: Whedon acknowledges that [having a killer as a main character] will be "very challenging," but he's certain that David Boreanaz, who portrays Angel, is up to the task, in part because of Boreanaz's on-camera charms. "We think he can pull it off because he's so darn cute," Whedon quips. "Sure, he's killed all these people. But look at that smile!" On extras: "Two vampires jump to do her bidding. They nod, but say nothing, because they are extras." On the cancellation of "Graduation Part II": "Bootleg that puppy." ![]()
