SHELTER ANIMALS MAKE GREAT PETS
Rather than purchasing that cute puppy, consider adopting a shelter pet. You would be giving a deserving animal a new home, and freeing up space for another animal that needs adopting, and there's no doubt about it, shelter animals make great pets. Here are just a few of the reasons why a rescue animal may be the pet for you!
** Most shelter residents are healthy, affectionate animals.
** Many have already lived with a human family and have the basic training, socialization, and cooperative skills they need to become part of your household and to get along with the humans and, in most cases, other dogs, and in some other cases, cats, as well.
** Shelter pets are a bargain, and will cost you much less overall than that cute puppy.
** Shelter pets are instant companions, ready for hiking, riding in the car, walking on leash, fetching, etc. You don't have to wait for them to grow up.
** Rescue dogs are a "known commodity." They are easy to assess for behavior and temperament, and you also don't have to guess at how big they'll grow.
** Fewer vet fees are involved. Rescue dogs have had physical examinations, have been spayed or neutered, have been tested for heartworm, and are up to date on shots. When you buy a puppy, you pay for the dog AND for puppy shots, spaying or neutering, and any other basic medical expenses.
