Queen Victoria Dachsies were the personal fasvourite of Britain's Queen Victoria, shown here with the royal dachshund Boy, of which a bronze statue was later erected at Windsor castle. Although she declined to breed her personal dogs, hunting dachshunds were bred in royal kennels throughout Victoria's reign. As a consequence of Queen Victoria's affection for the breed, dachsies became a favorite for women of fashion to parade around London's Hyde Park during the late 19th Century. |

Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso adored dogs and had at least one canine companion at all times in his life. One of these was a dachsie named Lump, of whom Picasso wrote, 'Lump is not a dog, not a man—he really is someone else.'' Lump was originally owned by photographer David Duncan, but after a visit to Picasso, the artist and dog became inseparable. (According to Duncan, ''He dumped me for Picasso.'') Lump slept with his new owner and he even ate at the table with his own dinner plate—a ceramic created for him by Picasso. Lump is seen to best advantage in Picasso's The Pianist, a reinterpretation of the Velázquez's masterpiece, Las Meninas in which this dachsie replaces Velázquez's noble mastiff. |
