LILIAN JACKSON BRAUN

CHARACTER:

QWILLERAN, KOKO,
YUM YUM

CATEGORY: THE ANIMAL ANGLE

Retired newspaper man Jim Qwilleran lives in Pickax City, the county seat of Moose County with his two Siamese cats, KoKo and Yum Yum. Qwilleran, the richest man in town, is heir to the Klingenschoen fortune, which he distributes to various civic and cultural improvement projects. Ko Ko, the cat, has a special talent for solving crimes. With the aid of his remarkable cat, Qwill keeps tabs on who is murdering who 400 miles north of anywhere. An odd series peopled with peculiar characters, these books are not to everyone's taste. However, I hate this kind of precious writing, like alley cats rather than Siamese, and still have to admit I've read the first 18 books and have the 19th on reserve at the library. Go figure.

REVIEWS

The Cat Who Said Cheese:

Midwest Book Review:

A food convention results in many planned events and unexpected bombing and murder, prompting Qwill and his feline friends to become involved in more than food tasting. Braun's special blend of feline involvement and murder mystery provides a satisfying, exceptional story line for both newcomers and avid 'Cat Who' fans.

The Cat Who Tailed A Thief :

The New York Times Book Review, Margalit Fox:

The book's kitty porn (cats purring, stretching, playing, throwing up hair-balls) functions here just as car chases, steamy bedroom scenes and little green men do in other genres. Fans come for the main event, and if the rest is boiler-plate, who cares?
