After the main customizing of your pony, you may want to add some special touches to her, like rosy cheeks or glittery emblems.  Here are some of my favorite techniques!

Glittery Emblems

Materials: Glitter (colored and silver), varnish or clear acrylic, newspaper, paintbrush

Grab a pony with glittery emblems and study her carefully.  You may notice that the glitter Hasbro used is very fine.  It is also a mix of two colors: the color of the emblem and silver.  Silver glitter reflects light much better than colored glitter, making the emblem more shimmery.

To create glittery emblems, you’ll need a fine glitter, like stamping glitter or nail art glitter.  You will also need something to apply it with, such as clear varnish.  I use Testors clear acrylic. Mix two colors of glitter—silver and the color of the emblem.  Spread out some newspaper, because glitter tends to scatter everywhere.

Paint the emblem in the desired color.  You now have two options.  You can sprinkle the mixed glitter over the wet paint, which gets very messy.  You can also let the emblem dry, mix the glitter with varnish, and apply it over the emblem.  You may need multiple coats to get it glittery enough.  This picture is of Baby Medley’s emblem after one coat of glitter.  She will need more coats of glitter to look authentic.

Rosy Cheeks

Materials: Cotton swab, fingernail polish remover, red water-based model paint

Repainting cheeks is tricky business, so you will need to practice first on a knock-off pony.  This method requires water-based model paint in red.  Other paints simply will not work.

Soak the cotton swab in fingernail polish remover (the pink variety seems to work best).  You may want to have another dampened swab handy in case you make a mistake.  Dab a tiny dot of paint on the end of the dampened swab.  Swirl the cotton swab over the cheek in a circular motion, blending out until you get a translucent color.  If you make a mistake, or can’t get the edges blended out enough, use the clean swab, dampened with polish remover to clean up the excess.

Beddy-Bye Eyes

You can slightly change the color of beddy-bye eyes using glass paint.  The clear color allows you to see the detail of the eye, such as the pupil.  Just paint a small dab onto the iris of the eye!

Shimmery Hair

Many fabric stores sell very fine tinsel identical to the tinsel used in Princess Pony and Sparkle Pony hair.  Tie a strand of it in with each plug and coat the knot with glue.  Otherwise, the tinsel may wiggle its way out of the knot.  Work a few strands into the tail so it matches the mane.
