"A hundred years from now
it will not matter
what my bank account was,
the sort of house I lived in,
or the kind of car I drove . . .
but the world may be different
because I was important
in the life of a child."

Words from Miss Shelley's class

(written for the class book Thank You Miss Shelley)

Miss Shelley
By: Jamie Bennett

Last year, 2001, I was in Alquina Elementary School. It was the beginning of my 3rd grade school year.

My teacher was Miss Shelley. When I first met her, I was not sure what kind of a teacher she would be.

I soon learned she was a very special teacher. She was special to me because she helped me with math and writing by giving me extra work to do. This helped me get extra practice. I think I can do both better because of the extra work.

I love her very much, I miss her, and I will see her in heaven.

In third grade, my teacher was Miss Shelley. I was excited about coming to the third grade because my sisters had had her as a teacher and I was now going to have her.

I liked her from the start. Miss Shelley was very funny. She would tell us she was ninety-nine.

Miss Shelley was also very nice and helped me learn. She helped me on multiplication, spelling and other things. Miss Shelly believed in me and helped me to always do my best.

Miss Shelley will never be forgotten. I loved her and miss her very much.

When I was in the 3rd grade at Alquina Elementary, Miss Shelly was my teacher. She was very nice.

She helped me with math by teaching me to multiply. She told us to remember 7x7=49 by telling us to remember the football team, The 49er’s. She liked football. She would tell us about some of the football games she had gone to. They sounded like fun.

She was a good teacher who loved to teach. She was my favorite teacher.

I will always miss her.

It all started when I was nine and in the third grade at Alquina Elementary School in the year 2001. Miss Shelley was my teacher. Her full name was Miss Pat Shelley. She was a very special teacher.

She would use awesome ways to teach us. She helped me learn my multiplication facts by playing games with unifix cubes. This made math fun to learn.

Miss Shelley was a cheerful lady who always had a smile on her face. She always made you smile and made you believe in each other and yourself.

Miss Shelley is in all of our hearts. I will always miss her.

In the year 2001, I was in the 3rd grade at Alquina Elementary School. My teacher was Miss Shelley.

She wanted me to be the best I could be in all subjects. She was funny in lots of ways.

I remember when she was 47 years old and she said she was 99. I also remember the time when she went to blow up a balloon and she popped it with her teeth on purpose. That made me laugh.

I will miss her very much because she was my favorite teacher.

This school year, 2001-2002, I am in the 3rd grade at Alquina Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, my teacher was Miss Shelley. She got sick and passed away. We were all very sad.

Miss Shelley made me feel wonderful by just being herself and showing me it was ok to be myself.

She was funny. She loved to tell us jokes about her age. She would say she was 99, but she was really 47. She made us laugh.

Miss Shelley made learning fun. She would give us rewards, like candy, when we got a 100 on our spelling tests. She loved to play games with us.

She was a wonderful teacher and I will always miss her.

A couple of months ago, I began 3rd grade. My school is Alquina Elementary. My teacher was Miss Shelley. She was always nice to me.

She was funny and she liked to tease us.  She always said she was ninety-nine.  My grandpa told me she was really only 47.

I will always remember how loving she was to me. She would always help me learn. There were 19 students in this class, but she always seemed to be able to help each one of us in a special way.

I’ll always remember her.

Six months ago, I entered 3rd grade at Alquina Elementary School. My teacher was Miss Shelley.

Miss Shelley was a wonderful teacher.

Miss Shelley noticed that I had a hard time in math. She helped me by doing extra math with me and would stay after school and would have me work extra problems.

That helped me understand math better. I think I am doing much better in math because she helped me. I have even passed all of my multiplication facts.

Miss Shelley was great. I am glad she was my teacher.

My name is Brooklyn. I am a third grader at Alquina Elementary School. My teacher was Miss Shelley. She was a pretty lady and an awesome teacher. I liked being in her class because she made learning fun. She let us watch videos sometimes.

Her favorite thing to do was to read books to us. She read books that were scary, funny, sad, and angry. She helped me in math by teaching me addition and subtraction. She made writing fun. I think she made me a better writer. I liked it when she would test me on how old I thought she was.

The best thing I remember about her is how much I love her.

When I was at Alquina Elementary School in the third grade, I had a very special teacher. Her name was Miss Shelley.

She was a very nice teacher. She helped me in math. She would shorten assignments so it would not take me so long to finish.

She was also funny.  She said she was 99 because she did not want to tell us what her real  age was. But I know she was really very young.

I miss her very much and will always remember her for the nice teacher she was.

A Super-Duper Teacher
By: Devin Scott

When I was in the third grade at Alquina Elementary, Miss Shelley was my teacher.

She was very nice and lovable. She was nice because whenever I did a good job, she would pat me on the back and tell me that I did a good job. This made me feel nice and warm inside.

The best thing I liked about her was her laugh and her jokes. Sometimes she said she was very old. She would say this to make us laugh and it worked. We would all laugh a lot when she told us her make-believe age.

Miss Shelley was a one of a kind teacher and I loved her.

The Teacher I Knew Through Grandma’s Memories
By: Brooke Smith

In March of 2002, I moved to a house near Alquina School. My mother had been home schooling me, but now I would go to school at Alquina Elementary. We had been planning the move for a long time. When we first thought we were going to move, my mom was excited that I would have Miss Shelley as a teacher because she had had her as a 1st and 3rd grade teacher.

My mom said Miss Shelley was her favorite teacher. I never had a chance to meet her because when I did finally come to school here, she was no longer here.

I know Miss Shelley through my grandmother’s stories. My grandmother has been a teacher at Alquina School for a long time and taught with Miss Shelley. She was my grandmother’s best friend. My grandmother’s name is Jan Smith. She talked about Miss Shelley all the time. She thinks the world of her.

I wish I had had the chance to meet Miss Shelley.
