The Atom
Following is a list of villians, foes, and various enemies that have made appearances in the Atom's life. The list is alphabetized by last name if applicable.
A
Amazo - robot who has the ability to mimic the powers of the JLA. (JLofA #112)
Anti-Matter Man (JLofA #47)
B
Blacksnake - Current Status: Deceased - Member of the Micro/Squad - Blacksnake worked as a covert agent for the CIA and was heavily involved in Operation Fireball. This was an attempt to coerce Ray Palmer into coming out of the Amazon and becoming a superspy for the CIA. Operation Fireball involved using slash and burn tactics with the Katarthans as a target. The CIA destroyed the section of the jungle where the Atom's people lived, killing them all, except for Ray. When Atom realized who had been involved, he developed a shrinking ray and reduced Blacksnake and the others to six-inch height. He then destroyed the ray, effectively trapping Blacksnake at this size. Blacksnake continued as a member of the Micro/Squad and worked for the Cabal. Blacksnake killed Atom III by shoving a large nail through his back and chest. He then stole the size-weight control belt, returned to full size, and squeezed the life out of Mr. Bailey and Ms. Hubbard, two other members of the Micro/Squad. Atom II, disguised as Sting, returned in time to witness the end of Mr. Bailey and Ms. Hubbard and he defeated Blacksnake, temporarily leaving him at sub-microscopic size. Atom II took Blacksnake into custody, turning him over to the authorities for trial. Blacksnake intended to plea bargain with information on the Cabal, but was killed by Metamorpheus to ensure his silence.(Suicide Squad #64)
Bug-Eyed Bandit, The - aka Anton Larva - Current Status: Deceased - Another villain from the Atom's past. (Atom #33)
C
Cabal, The - Current Status: Unknown - International Group of Terrorists - The Cabal was instrumental in the manipulation of ex-CIA agent Mr. Bailey, the double-agent work of the Micro/Squad, and the deaths of Atom III and Blacksnake.
Calculator, The - Current Status: Unknown - Criminal mastermind who 'calculated' his plans out to the infinite details, even planning his captures and escapes in advance. (Detective Comics #463)
Chronos - aka David Clinton. Arch villain of the Atom.
Clinton, David - aka Chronos - Current Status: Faded to nothingness - David Clinton was a small time thief who spent time in jail, contemplating the failures he experienced. Realizing if he had more time to plan and commit these robberies he would have succeeded, he changed his techniques to incorporate the element of time. Once he was released, he went back to his thievery. But this time, he was able to succeed. His plans were soon thwarted by the 'timely' intervention of the Atom, who landed the criminal back into jail. Time and time again, the Atom would return Chronos back to jail or stop his plans. Chronos' schemes grew in stature, as did his ability to manipulate time. Eventually, Chronos, sometimes called the Master of Time, was able to stop and start time at will, develop a timeship that was always a half-second out of phase with realtime, recreate images in an area to see what had happened in the recent past, and even reconstruct images from a persons past memories. All of these were done with the aid of various devices which he built himself. But time was not kind to David, and eventually it caught up with him. After years of tampering with the fabric of time, his body had developed a problem with staying in phase with reality. He began to fade, a little at first, and more as time went on. Eventually, his body slipped away, leaving no traces of him behind. (see Chronos #5) Although these type of 'deaths' are easily reversed (i.e., he could have gone to another dimension like the speed force ?time force?), it seems unlikely that David Clinton will return to life anytime soon, although a younger Chronos can always appear (or an alternate reality one?) (Atom #3, #13, #28)
Construct, The - giant robot (JLofA #146)

Dr. Destiny - Current Status: Incarcerated - Villain who terrorized the JLA early on by developing a machine called a Materioptikon that made dreams come true. In later years, he used a weak mental version of this device to control the Atom's dreams and force the JLA into the Atom's warped dream world. The Atom was able to regain control and aid Blue Beetle in turning the tables on Destiny and freeing them all from the dream-realm. Dr. Destiny is still imprisoned at this time. (JLofA #19)
Dr. Light - aka Doctor Light - Current Status: Imprisoned in Green Lantern's Power Battery - Foe of both the Justice League and the Atom. (Atom #8)
Druid, The - Current Status: Unknown - Evil sorceror who imprisoned Zatara and caused Zatanna to team-up with the Atom early in his career.
E
Extant aka Hank Hall aka Hawk aka Monarch aka Waverider - Current Status: Unknown - - Chronal villain whose energies infused the Atom's body during Zero Hour. Extant's powers were derived as a combination of Hawk and Dove, Monarch, and Waverider. Extant de-aged the Atom from thirtysomething to roughly 16 years old before he was defeated by the combined attack of the heroes who were defending the restoration of the universe. (Zero Hour)

Galg the Destroyer - Current Status: Destroyed - Undersea ruler of a micro-world, Galg attacked both the Atom and Aquaman and was later destroyed by the two.(The Brave and the Bold #53)
Ginsburg - Current Status: Deceased - CIA Agent who was involved with Project Fireball, a project that destroyed the Katarthan race and forced the Atom out of hiding in the Amazon. Ginsburg was eventually found out by the Atom and was punished, being reduced to six inch height. The tiny agent continued to work for the CIA but became a double agent along with the rest of the Micro/Squad, working for the Cabal. Ginsburg died while trying to kill Ray Palmer at Ivy University. The Atom restored Ginsburg's body to full height and set the lab on fire, masking Ginsburg's death and making it appear as if Ray Palmer had died in the fire.

Icicle, The - vs. JLA as a member of the Crime Champions of Earth-1 (JLofA #21)
IQ
J
Johnny Thunder of Earth-1 and his Lawless League (JLofA #37-38)
Junkman - A robot gone wild, this robot was a simple creation that was accidentally infused with energies released by Ray Palmer from the bottled city of Kandor. Junkman went on a rampage and was eventually brought under control by Superman and Green Arrow. Rather than scrap Junkman, the Kandorians shrank it down to their size, brought it into the bottled city, and reprogrammed it to serve them. This is a pre-Crisis story. (Action Comics #455)
K
Key, The - from the Justice League of America (JLofA #41)
Kobra - appeared with Atom III in the pages of the Suicide Squad.
Kulan Dar - 1st appearance in Showcase #34 - Alien from the planet Julnar whose people travel by teleportation using the element Europium to fuel their jumps. Kulan lost control of a teleport and ended up on Earth. Once on Earth, he attempted to gather more Europium to leave. In the process, he met up with Carl Ballard, who trapped him using his own device (the Dominator) against him. Forced to commit crimes for Ballard, Kulan Dar fought against the Atom and lost, allowing the Atom to defeat Ballard and free Kulan Dar. (Showcase #34)
L
M
Menagerie Man, The - non continuity story from the Super Friends. Villain shrinks animals and stores them in a 'menagerie'. The Atom intervenes. (Super Friends #6)
Micro/Squad - The Atom 'created' this group when he took his revenge on those responsible for destroying the Katarthan settlement of New Morlaidh. Using a shrinking ray, he zapped each of the members of the CIA who had been directly involved (Mr. Baily, Ms. Hubbard, Ginsburg, Sting, and Blacksnake) and left them stuck at six inch height. The CIA director was so happy to have 'tiny' agents, that he forgave the Atom for his actions and (of course) disavowed any knowledge of the 'Operation Fireball' that the agents had used to flush the Atom out of hiding. These agents reappeared in the Suicide Squad, 'killing' Ray Palmer in a lab explosion (It was Ginsburg who died while attacking Ray. Ray resized Ginsburg and used the agent's body to fake his own death) and eventually going after Atom III (Adam Cray). Sting surrendered and Ray joined the squad disguised as him. Mr. Bailey and Ms. Hubbard were killed by Blacksnake after Blacksnake killed Atom III and stole the size-weight control belt to return to full height. Ray threw off the guise as Sting and defeated Blacksnake, bringing him to justice. Before Blacksnake could go to trial and reveal the Cabal behind the entire mission, he was killed by the alternate Task Force X II (who also worked for the Cabal), to protect themselves.

During the Atom's attack on the CIA safehouse, Sting attacked the Atom with all kinds of miniature creatures, but was eventually defeated and shrunk down to six inches tall. Becoming a member of the Micro/Squad, Sting never seemed to enjoy life as a true covert agent. When Ginsburg was killed while trying to murder Ray Palmer, Sting began to question why he stayed with the squad. Later, he was offered a chance to redeem himself by allowing Palmer to take his place. He was returned to full height, entered the Witness Protection Program, and hasn't been seen since.
Strobe - Current Status: In Jail? - Villain who attacked the Atom after his return from the Amazon. Strobe's armored car robbery was overshadowed by the Atom's return and he vowed revenge for losing the limelight. Strobe's powers were through a suit of armor that allowed him to throw concussion blasts as well as deliver a blinding flash of light. The Atom shrank until he could fit inside the suit, caused the power supply to overload, and turned Strobe over to the police.(Power of the Atom #3) Later, while in jail, Strobe was freed and took on a new costume and a new identity. He called himself Edg the Destroyer and sported a japanese samurai motif with a powered sword. He managed to subdue the Atom and Paul Hoben and left them tied up with a gas bomb. He then took over a television station (WIVY) and announced that he had killed the Atom. The Atom, however, had freed himself and Paul, and as the Atom secretly weighed down Edg's sword, Paul proceeded to beat the tar out of the villain. Strobe/Edg was returned to jail.(Power of the Atom #12)

Woodrue, Jason - aka the Plant Master, aka the Floronic Man - Jason was a rebel from another dimension who was attempting to overthrow the existing government. He would have succeeded, had it not been for the timely intervention of the Atom. This started a series of confrontations between the Atom and the Plant-Master, who changed his name to the Floronic Man after ingesting a potion intended to alter his body into a plant. Becoming an actual living intelligent plant, the Floronic Man continued his quest to conquer the government of his original dimension, but was deterred each time by the Atom. Eventually, he was selected by the Guardians of Oa to become one of the New Guardians. Little has been heard of him since that series was cancelled, although the New Guardians (except for Jason and Tom Kalimaku) were wiped out at some point. (Atom #1, #24)
