The Atom

The following is a few facts about the Atom's home town of Ivy Town.

Ivy Town

While Ivy Town is most recently famous as the birthplace of the Atom, it has a rich history that draws back to many New England roots. Post-Crisis, Ivy Town was the sister city to Calvin City, also the birthplace of the first man to call himself the Atom. While a friendly rivalry between the two neighboring cities has always been in place, it is interesting to note that the two cities mirror each other in many ways. Ivy Town is the home of one of the states more historic universities. The city, as well as the university, gained its name from the excessive amount of ivy that grew all about the region.

Ivy Town Scientists

Ivy Town is home to many interesting characters, including Ray Palmer, who is most famous as the Atom, but also as one of the world's most renowned scientists on sub-nuclear theory. Having first hand knowledge of how subatomic particles operate, Ray has distinguished himself in the scientific community. His knowledge of time theory is second to only a few other scientists. While the Challengers and other well-known time travellers come to mind, Professor Alpheus Hyatt is known for his expertise as well. Having developed the Time Pool, a small device for projecting an object into the past, Professor Hyatt succeeded where many men had failed. The Atom had been known to use this device many times to travel on short jaunts into the past to explore and investigate little known facts of history. Other scientific minds, like Enrichetta Negrini, often are overlooked, but her brilliant mind and determination are well known on the campus of Ivy Town. Having started off as a research assistant to Professor Palmer, she grew quickly in her knowledge and abilities and has moved on towards a professorship of her own.
