Week 5 Team 1 Team 2 John Allendorf Mike Arana Bob Glover Ryan Geib Kyle Gonzales Jeff Renn Matt Lams Larry Tachik Tom Phelps Kenny Williams Andy Wronko Week 5's game was a game full of unexpected surprises. Team 2 co-captain Jeff Renn was not supposed to play, but did. Kyle Gonzales, who was supposed to replace Renn at quarterback for Team 2, not only didn't play quarterback, but wasn't even on Team 2. Week 5 also saw the return of two of the most athletically dominant players in HSFL history, Matt Lams and Larry Tachik. On paper, Team 2 appeared to be the favorite to start the game, with several veterans, and a definite power advantage, Team 2 could have very easily won this game. The first play of the game was a good summary of what we would see for the remainder of the afternoon. Tachik's kickoff was deep, but returned by Matt Lams for a touch down. The Team 2 miscues didn't stop there, on their next possession, Jeff Renn threw an interception to Bob Glover that was returned for a touch down, giving Team 1 an early 2-0 lead. On the next possession, Team 2 fumbled and Glover recovered it. Team 1 went on to score giving them a 3-0 lead. Team 2 would rally with good defense to within one at half, 5-4. Unfortunately for Team 2, their run at the end of the first half, was the last such run they would have in the game. Several turnovers cost Team 2 any chance they may have had to win. Glover forced a Renn fumble which was recovered by Tom Phelps, add that with Team 2's inability to score on a few possessions, and Team 1 lead 9-6 late in the game. Team 2 needed to get something going to have any chance of winning, but those hopes were shot down when Kenny Williams's deep pass intended for Mike Arana was intercepted by Kyle Gonzales giving Team 1 the ball. Glover threw a deep pass to Phelps to end the game. Team 1 tied the season series at 1 with the win in week 5, with contributions from all 5 players. Lams, who wasn't even supposed to play, showed rust in the early going, but came out of it as the game progressed. Phelps continued his great play on offense both running and receiving. Gonzales made several key catches and a crucial interception to seal the victory. John Allendorf continued his season that could win him rookie of the year honors. Despite throwing his first interception of the year, Glover looked great as he has all year, leading the pass game, hurting Team 2 on the run, and making three key defensive plays. Team 2 had an off week to say the least in week 5. Although they had a fairly balanced attack with Tachik going deep, and Renn and Arana out of the backfield, the offense turned the ball over several times, and just couldn't seem to move the ball for the majority of the second half. Although he shared quarterbacking duties with Williams, Renn also ran the ball very well despite having no touchdowns to show for it. Arana continued to run the ball well also and Tachik was nearly unstoppable as long as the ball was thrown well enough. The problem was, that often times the ball wasn't thrown well enough leading to two interceptions and several missed opportunities. Williams provided a good spark on defense and kept Glover's running in check more than most players have in the past, and Ryan Geib provided a pleasant surprise as a run stopper. Team 2 will look to rebound for week 6. |
