My thrifty old Yankee ancestors knew what they were doing when they collected burlap sacks, soup cans, candle drippings, and odd bits of string. Yeah, recycling is great, but what if you could reuse - even repurpose - your trash one, or three, or even ten times? You'd be saving energy, money...and the environment! And here in Vermont, we are very limited in what we can recycle, so reuse is key to sustainability.

I think I do pretty well with reducing my consumption, but there are a few modern conveniences I just can't seem to do without - prepared foods being the biggest culprit. I reuse ALOT (just ask my husband about my "hoard"), but hey - I have only so much storage space in my home. So I'm here to share my wealth with you. See something you can use? Just click the email address on the bottom to contact me.

And if you have your own collection of "reYOUsables", I encourage you to advertise them with: www.freecycle.org

Your trash may be someone else's treasure. You wouldn't believe the garbage I've found a use for - so don't be shy, share your "Trashure" trove online!

Dishes/ Home

1. Asian dishes. 4-6 sets for most items.

2. Glasses, tumblers, dessert bowls, parfait glasses in amber and purple. 4-6 sets for most items.

3. Cut crystal-style glass spice containers.

4. Small blue canisters.

5. Nalgene bottles. In addition to making good hiking/biking bottles, I keep one of these on my kitchen counter for collecting water for my plants - after I steam veggies or cook pasta, I let the water cool, then pour it in. Another way to reuse resources! (And the plants like the extra nutrients.)

6. Misc. Tupperware. I have two big bags full, all sizes and shapes.

7. Orphan containers - bottoms without tops and tops without bottoms. Some creative uses I’ve found for lidless containers - to catch drips under leaky pipes, to start seeds indoors or grow small plants, to hold odds-and-ends or crafts or hardware supplies, as a travel bowl to keep in the car for on-the-go meals; for containerless lids - to put under small flower pots, to reinforce paper art projects, as a stencil for tracing different shapes, as a small cutting board, as a travel plate to keep in the car.

8.	Patio chair cushions (4) - aqua. Are hardy enough to be used as boat cushions.

9. Toilet brush, never used. (I swear! We bought it and then found our old one.)

10. Misc. drapery/curtain hardware.

11. Very cool wooden hat rack. Lists a bit to one side, but has served us well for more than a decade. No room for it in our current home. May be antique.

12. Victorian-style lamp with glass and bead shade.

Containers/ "Trashure"

1.	9 to 32 oz food containers. **Current Stock: many smaller containers; low on 24-32 oz. If you need containers regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many of each size you would like.** Contained dairy and bulk products such as nuts and trail mix. All thoroughly cleaned in dishwasher. I use containers like these for leftovers, art projects, storing stuff like hardware or craft items, collecting compost, watering plants, and starting seeds indoors

2.	Assorted bottles. **Current Stock: lots, esp. pill-sized bottles. If you need bottles regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know what your needs are.** My stock is always changing, so ask what I’ve got. Bottles typically have contained oils, extracts, medications, or beauty products. All are thoroughly cleaned. *If you plan to reuse these bottles for storing food or condiments, let me know. I will send you only containers which have housed spices, oils, and other edible items.

3.	Assorted clear flip-lid containers. **Current Stock: lots, all sizes! If you need containers regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many of each size you would like.** Contained bulk food products such as trail mix and snacks. Hand-washed. I use these for storing leftovers and organizing craft items, hardware, office supplies, and computer equipment.

4.	Egg cartons. Usually plastic, but sometimes paper. **Current Stock: 1 plastic, 4 paper. If you need egg cartons regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many of each kind you would like.** In addition to storing eggs (duh!) these are great for sorting beads and buttons for crafts, packing or storing jewelry, and starting seeds indoors.

5.	6 oz. yogurt cups. **Current Stock: low. If you need containers regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many you would like.** Cleaned in the dishwasher. Use for kids’ snack cups, crafts, mini-flower pots, sorting craft items or hardware, or use instead of disposable Dixie cups. My husband eats A LOT of yogurt, so we almost always have a bunch of these around.

6.	Straws. **Current Stock: lots! If you need straws regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many you would like.** Use for crafts, sorting/counting seeds, or…well…drinking straws. Sealed and unused - I pull them off my mini-milk cartons.

7.	Tins, glorious tins! **Current Stock: low. If you need tins regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use.** I love tins so much that I go out of my way to buy products that are in tins rather than the usual paper or plastic packages. I can only use so many though, and currently I’m maxed out. I use tins for organizing craft and sewing supplies (like needles and pins), spices, hardware, collecting seeds, storing candies and snacks, storing jewelry.

8.	Trays. **Current Stock: LOADS! If you need containers regularly, I can alert you when I have items you can use. Please let me know how many of each size you would like.** These contained fruits, veggies, and frozen meals. The hardier plastic ones have all been washed in the dishwasher and the Styrofoam trays have been hand washed. Trays are great for sorting and storing craft supplies, for kids’ arts and crafts, for starting plants indoors, and for cleaning and sorting fruits and veggies.
