Welcome to my page! I'll start off with a little bit of background. I was born in Dover,
DE to an Air Force pilot and his wife. I have since lived in Texas, Florida, Ohio, Virginia,
United Kingdom and Louisiana. If you are also a survior of the military, check out
Military Brats and find out what happend to all your old chums! I am now residing in
Texas with my husband, Robert, and our dear daughter, Helen Gail. I am a
stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) to HG.
Let's see.... I'm addicted to the internet; in particular, Yahoo clubs and my web pages. I
spend quite a bit of time on-line, chatting with other Mom's, learning new things, and just
basically lurking everywhere. My id for just about everything is Elkayem. It is my
initials (L.K.M.) sounded out. So if you see me around, say hello!
Before I realized that raising my daughter is priority number one, I worked in the mental
health field. I graduated from Texas A&M University (Whoop!) with a bachelors of
science in Psychology. I then went to work with the Texas Department of Mental Health
Mental Retardation. I was a case worker and eventually the Progam
Manager (Administrator) for the Assertive Community Treatment Team. More
specifically, myself and four other case workers helped to keep 30+ adults out of the
hospital and in the community. ACT Team goal was to help the clients remain in their
homes and manage their mental illness. The low staff-to-client ratio was the key in
helping these people with repeat hospitalizations and substance abuse problems. I miss
my job very much! It was very intense, 24/7, and intinsically rewarding..... kind of like
motherhood!
So, what brought about my change from career-oriented woman to SAHM? Well, besides
just giving birth and finally getting some good estrogen, I owe a lot to Dr. Laura. In case
you don't know, Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio host and author, who helps callers,
listeners, and readers with their moral dilemmas. Dr. Laura also is very much in favor of
parents raising their children and not sending them to instituitionalized day care (hence,
"I am my kids mom"), taking responsibility for your actions, and honoring your
commitments. Thanks to her, I know I am doing what is best for my family. If you haven't
listented to her show, tune it in. It's a hoot!
