I
sit
and stare outside
Through the raindrop-spattered window.
My mind is open wide,
Wondering 'bout the things I don't know.
A blue bird's on the windowsill,
Sheltered from the rain.
I catch her glance and time stands still,
And I can see again.
The bird is shiv'ring, cold and wet,
She's beckoning to me.
Her gaze seems almost human.
Could it truly be?
The rain is unforgiving,
and darkness fills the skies,
But something strong is living
And speaking through her eyes.
So I open up the window,
Expecting her to flee.
But instead of out where wind blows,
She flies within, to me.
As she quivers on my arm,
ever searching ever wary,
I can see now, with alarm,
She's some kind of blue canary.
She sings a song of thanks and praise
'Till again we see the day.
Then I let her out to the sun's rays,
And watch her fly away.
