OPERATION:  PHILANTHROPIST

 Teacher's Notes

OPERATION: PHILANTHROPIST is a WebQuest project designed to teach a number of the learning objectives of English 3102, the Business Communication course designed for Level III students under the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation guidelines.  The course topics covered by this project include:
Communication within small and large groups.
Effective note taking.
Research using the Internet.
Pre-writing strategies, including brainstorming techniques.
Drafting, proof-reading and editing strategies.
Proper formats for writing formal letters, memorandums, and formal   and informal reports.
Organizing and running business meetings.
Developing and running PowerPoint presentations.
The resources for OPERATION: PHILANTHROPIST include the English 3102 textbook Communicating for Business (Scarborough, Ontario: Nelson Canada, 1990), as well as a variety of web-based resources which are listed below.  OPERATION: PHILANTHROPIST is designed to do more than just teach students practical skills.  One of the aims of this project is to give students hands-on experience using the skills they will learn, while simultaneously getting them involved in the school and local communities, and helping them to develop a better resume by the time they have completed this course.

Tips for Teachers

This project is designed to be carried out over a long period of time, and can be used in either a full or half year course.  The steps of OPERATION: PHILANTHROPIST can be carried out at different points throughout the course as students encounter the types of tools and documents each step reinforces.
This project works best if students are working in groups of 3 or 4.
You can drop or add links to student resources as you feel appropriate, especially the links to charity organizations.  You may wish to modify this project by adding links to some of the prominent charities in your local community.
Students should not be restricted to using only those charities for which you have provided links.  Encourage students to do furthur research on their own to find charities which may interest them.  It is okay if more than one group chooses the same charity, although you should encourage variety, and the concept that philanthropists like to "share the wealth."
You may find it helpful to reinforce the activities in this project by giving students handouts on the different types of tools and documents they will use.
Each group should be encouraged to divide the work under each step evenly, to keep a list of who has been assigned which tasks, and to consult with the teacher if group members are not pulling their weight.
Remind students that more is at stake in this project than just a final  grade, and that there could benefits for other people (such as the charity organizations) from their success, or consequences from their failure to participate.
Encourage students by reminding them that they are doing something positive for their community and helping themselves at the same time.
