Illinois State Learning Standards

STATE GOAL 6: Demonstrate and apply a knowledge and sense of numbers, including numeration and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), patterns, ratios and proportions.

C. Compute and estimate using mental mathematics, paper-and-pencil methods, calculators and computers.

6.C.3a Select computational procedures and solve problems with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and proportions.

6.C.3b Show evidence that computational results using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and proportions are correct and/or that estimates are reasonable.

D. Solve problems using comparison of quantities, ratios, proportions and percents.

6.D.3 Apply ratios and proportions to solve practical problems.

Prior Knowledge Needed

Students should have a basic knowledge of proportions and percents.  Students may need to know area, but if they don't, they can learn it through this webquest.  This project should tie together the ideas presented with ratios, rates and proportions.

I assume that all students in our district know what DACC is, but for those outside of the district it is Danville Area Community College.

Other Thoughts

There are some potential problems that you may encounter during this webquest.  Students may feel overwhelmed with the amount of work to do in this project.  Continue to guide and challenge them so they don't feel like they are drowning in a sea of math.

I think that the instructions for the students are fairly self-explanatory, but if you have more questions please email me.

Allow students to explore and expand on this project to help them take ownership of it.  You could have them design team colors, mascots and decorations for the new court if you want.  Other extensions could be to talk about area (of the court) and volume (of the bleachers).

The rubrics on the evaluation page are ones that I made on rubistar.4teachers.org and you should feel free to use your own.

Want to make your own webquest?  If you're in D118, contact your local CRP or Solution One representative and they can help you get started.  (You can email me as well.)  You can also check out Bernie Dodge's sites at:
