Name information: Sonomi means 'beautiful garden'. The name Daidouji is a prestigious, heraldic Japanese name of a high order.

Sonomi has an interesting story behind her. Here is a little story about her past, with coloured names for easy reference. Sonomi and Nadeshiko were very very close friends (I think cousins) when they were young. Sonomi was very protective over the light-headed Nadeshiko, and protected her (here is where the strong yin vs. yang contrast of CLAMP comes out once more.) like a brother, really. But at school, Fujitaka was their teacher, just graduated from University to teach. Nadeshiko fell in love with Fujitaka, but since she came from a very rich family with special standards for her, they were forbidden to marry. Nadeshiko died when Sakura was three, and Sonomi had always blamed Fujitaka for her dying. She said it was because of sadness, and Sonomi would never forgive him.

Eventually, however, to end up a happy ending, she realises that Nadeshiko did not die because of Fujitaka, instead she really got a chance to live. But even after realising this, Sonomi "still hates him a little bit".

Sonomi was very strongly attached to the high-class standards she grew up with, disapproving of Nadeshiko's love for a 'simple teacher' and eventually marrying very high herself. But her strong yang sense remains: she is very good at sports, and her hobbies include driving and racing, rather like Sailor Uranus from Sailormoon. If you contrast the profiles of Nadeshiko and Sonomi, there are many interesting relationships in their likes, dislikes and personalities.

What do we think of Sonomi Daidouji?

Richard: Sonomi, we can all agree, is strong and binding. She gives depth to the plot and explains a little more about not only Sakura's family, but Tomoyo's behavior as well. She's a typical CLAMP character: a borderline feminist character with as much or more power than the men around her, both as a plot character and in her life. I'm not going to pick since Viscay did that, so I'll just applaud CLAMP for another well-designed woman.

Viscay: Sonomi needs a wake-up call. She has a strong and willful personality, but it gets really pathetic when it's like seven years after her cousin's death and she still can't get over the fact that Nadeshiko might have loved someone else more. I know it's a part of family and the way she was brought up, but it's not the Edo period anymore, people, wake up. People don't fit into categories and class so much anymore. I would have thought Sonomi of all people might've understood that.

Riki: Sonomi is obsessive and aggressive, with a streak of revenge ingrained in her since the day her dear Nadeshiko fell into her teacher's arms. She rocks. She's a powerful character without being a feminist or a *female dog* and who retains her rather static character throughout most of the story, and even when she relents finally and begins to accept the situation, she never loses her beliefs. I hate the kind of character that all the sudden repents and wants to be the good guy again, because it doesn't happen that way. Aside from her obsessivness, Sonomi is probably the most realistic character in the story.

I'm kind of pissed off about the pop-up box, but so far they're still the best provider we've found.
