My Beatles Discography

Since there aren't really any Beatles' songs I dislike, it wouldn't make sense to lay out my favorites so here are a few general comments and favorite songs. (All of these are the CDs, I have a few random LPs.)

1963
Please Please Me
A very good album with a healthy mix of covers (Boys, Baby It's You, Twist and Shout) and Beatles' originals (Anna [Go to Him], Love Me Do, Do You Want to Know a Secret?).
1963
With the Beatles
A few more covers (Till There Was You, Money) and a few more originals (It Won't Be Long, Not a Second Time) make this CD pretty good too. Both this and Please Please Me have that bouncy, early Beatles sound.
1964
A Hard Day's Night
The companion to the great movie, with all the fantastic songs from the movie, including the title track, And I Love Her, If I Fell, and Can't Buy Me Love and 6 other wonderful songs like You Can't Do That, I'll Cry Instead, and Things We Said Today.
1964
Beatles for Sale
My second Beatles album, I think, and definitely a great choice. Sure there are a bunch of covers, like George's neat Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby, but there are solid Beatles' songs like What You're Doing, No Reply, Every Little Thing, and I Don't Want to Spoil the Party.
1965
Help!
The movie isn't quite A Hard Day's Night, but the CD is excellent with songs from the movie -- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, Another Girl, and You're Going to Lose that Girl and a few more like I've Just Seen a Face and Yesterday. And there are two great George songs, I Need You and You Like Me Too Much.
1965
Rubber Soul

With smart, good songs like Girl and Norwegian Wood this is a superb album. I especially like You Won't See Me, If I Needed Someone, The Word, Think for Yourself and the beautiful In My Life.

1966
Revolver
My first Beatles album. Starting off with George's smart, biting Taxman and the somber Eleanor Rigby and ending with the cool Tomorrow Never Knows, it's my favorite. And one of their best songs Here, There and Everywhere is also on there.
1967
Magical Mystery Tour
It features Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane, John and Paul's respective depictions of their hometowns, both so good they were released as a double A-side. Also on this CD is the perfect Hello Goodbye, I Am the Walrus, and the notable Fool on the Hill.
1967
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
I never fully appreciated Paul until this one, but with great songs like Fixing a Hole and Lovely Rita, he won me over. It's a great album through and through, ending with the phenomenal A Day in the Life.
1968
The White Album
Where to begin? 30 pretty revolutionary songs. My faves include Rocky Racoon, Why Don't We Do It in the Road, Cry Baby Cry, I'm So Tired, Blackbird, Don't Pass Me By, Back in the USSR, Mother Nature's Son, Revolution, and Long, Long, Long.
1969
Yellow Submarine
Only four "new" Beatles' songs, but the real standout is George's Only a Northern Song, which was pretty much about how he was getting screwed because he didn't get as many songs on the albums as John & Paul. (And thus kinda got less money too.)
1970
Let It Be
The last original album, and a pretty awesome finale. (Except they just keep coming back even 30 years later.) All terrific songs, especially Across the Universe, Let It Be, and the reflective and touching The Long and Winding Road.
1988
Past Masters Volume One
A few of these songs are on other albums, but those that aren't like Yes It Is, Thank You Girl, Matchbox, Slow Down and This Boy are great. Especially neat are German versions of I Wanna Hold Your Hand and She Loves You.
1988
Past Masters Volume Two
Same on the mix of album and non-album tacks with standouts like Paperback Writer, Rain, Hey Jude, The Ballad of John and Yoko, and We Can Work It Out.
1996
Anthology 2
Though Free as a Bird on the first Anthology is better, Real Love isn't bad, though John sounds like he's under water. There is great previously unreleased stuff like That Means a Lot and If You've Got Trouble, cool instrumental versions (Eleanor Rigby), live cuts (a nice version of Yesterday), and alternate takes (Only a Northern Song, Your Mother Should Know).
1996
Anthology 3
More of the same with no new song, but more alternate takes (The End, Don't Pass Me By,Cry Baby Cry, Honey Pie, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I Will, Teddy Boy, and I've Got a Feeling, ,) and demos (Mean Mr. Mustard, Come and Get It, and Something).
2000
Beatles 1
Had this not been a gift, I probably never would have gotten it since all the songs are on other albums and are arguably not the best Beatles songs. But the pictures of the single covers are pretty neat to look at.
