Hi! I am from Singapore! Great fan of China Crisis! It;s the good tunes
and easy listening all round dat is really my cup of tea! I have known
them since 1982 when hit single Tragedy & Mystery was a big hit in UK!
Their music basically cover every spectre of life! Do u know the song "
Watching The Rainclouds"! My fav is "Animals in Jungle" LOL! But the best
instrumentals of their have to be "Performing Seals"! So Tomas, what do u
do for life?! I am a bookkeeper - MALE/33 yrs of age! Still single living
with my parents in an apartment! Have a dog who still doesnt know its
gender! LOL! Well dat is all I can write for now! Hope to hear from u
soon! By the way I also made contact with a David Pinkis from your
guestbook who so desperately needs a copy of the collection cd! Well take
care and Have a Good New Year '98!

Tomas,

OK. Here is what I have to supplement what I saw on your discography site
about 2 weeks ago.....

12" "Wishful Thinking" (same tracks as other 12")
#VSX 1187 Red Vinyl Canadian

3" CD "Saint Saviour Square" (same tracks as the one you list) Mine is a 3"
CD

LP "Working With Fire and Steel" #VL 2273 Canadian MIne has lyrics on
inner sleeve

12" "Working With Fire and Steel" 9 20172-OA Warner Bros. 1983 US

CD "China Crisis Collection: The Very Best of China Crisis" You have it
listed with an incorrect title, but I'm sure this is the one you meant, here
is the info:
#Carol 1117-2 Caroline Records 1997 US

Cassette "What Price Paradise" #CS 5148 A&M w/o Trading in Gold (I
believe this could be Canadian but there are no markings anywhere)

CD (double) "Wishful Thinking" #SMD-CD 117 Snapper Music 1997 UK

Tomas, now I have a few questions that I hope you can answer.

Is there a 12" (extended) mix of Black Man Ray ?

Is there a 12" (extended) mix of Highest High?

Are there 2 versions of Animalistic ? If so, on what items can I find each ?
Where is the normal version and where is the Day at the Zoo mix found ?

Are there 2 versions of The Instigator ? If so, on what items can I find each
? Where is the normal version and where is the Italian Fuzzbox mix ?
You mentioned that some of the compilations have these tracks marked wrong.
So I need to know where they are :-)

I don't know anyone else who likes or has even heard of China Crisis. But I'm
glad you have a list of people that have shown some interest.

I have a Minidisc Recorder and have put all my vinyl onto Minidisc. It sounds
amazing !!! I have one whole disc of 12" mixes but I'm still after a few that
I don't have. (Tragedy & Mystery and original 12" of African & White - I
have all the other versions of A & W :-).

Tomas, it was nice chatting with you. Keep me up to date and stay in touch
!!!

John

I can't even believe this is happening. Thank you very much, I think I'm
only one of the few number of New Romantics in Brazil, and one of the 3
or 4 that knows China Crisis by here. Thanks God, there is now a mailing
where I can talk about China Crisis. All the world fans. Unbelievable.
Loveable. and all ables ... imaginables. Thank you.

I have also the obligation to invite you all China Crisis fans in the
world to know my 80's lyrics page. The first brazilian page totally
dedicated to the 80's. Midi files, Album covers, biographies (this
section only in portuguese version, once there are a lot of biography
pages of these bands in english around the world), I decided to make
some sections only in portuguese, but there more than 3000 lyrics
available about the 80's. More than 200 midi files and also 300 album
covers, I'd like to also invite you to take part in the election of the
80 best of the 80's that I'm doing at my 80's page. China Crisis has
only one vote 'till moment. And I know there's not only one CC fan in
the world.

I can't believe you won't put CC in the place they deserve. The top of
80's bands, songs, albums, album sleeves (covers), clips. Please go to
my page and choose in your opinion the best bands of the 80's, best
songs, best albums, best album covers, best videoclips and best movies
of the 80's.

My China Crisis section is not so complete, because here in Brazil it's
very hard to get their works, or any information about them, even lyrics
it's hard to get, once our mother-language is portuguese. Although CC is
one of my fave ones. Really, one of 3 favourites.

I'm waiting for your visit. And your voting, of corse, let's put China
Crisis at the place it deserves.

A big hug to everyone on the list.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,
I was 14 when I discovered China Crisis and now I'm 26 and still experiencing
the same unconscious animism I inherited as a child . I was a huge Simple
Minds fan and I'd read that China Crisis was the support act for Simple Minds,
so I checked out this song called "Black Man Ray," and didn't like it, but I
thought the flipside, "Animalistic," was the strangest and most wonderful
thing I'd ever heard. So I bought, "Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms." I'd
never heard anything like it. I though it was gorgeously refined, pleasantly
snide, and hip in a way that a dictionary fails to explain. I played it for my
friend. He was a smart kid, but he didn't get it. I said, "Don't you thing
this guy's voice is beautiful?" and he said, "It's too British and he doubles
his vocal tracks." Well, I said, 'Fuck You, go listen to your Rolling Stones'
albums, that guy's got a great voice. I didn't play him any more China Crisis
records. Anyway, I've been buying and listening fervently to China Crisis
records since. I was lucky find most of their rarer stuff when I was in
England a few years back. I'm still missing a few items I've very much like to
have. Does anyone have any live bootlegs that they'd be willing to lend to a
nice American kid. I heard a live version of "Soul Awakening," from 1984. I
was super-impressed with the way Kevin Wilkinson and Gazza got away with
playing this implied funk feel over the whole thing without ruining the tune.
I played it for my girlfriend. She said, "This guy's got a beautiful voice!"

Hi Tomas!
Greetings from sunny Florida. I was just wasting time on the web and found
a great site, the Ultimate Band List, and thought I check one of my all time
faves, China Crisis. Great job! I was pleasantly surprised about how many
devoted fans there are out there. I certainly thought I'd be the only fan in
Florida but you've had communication from all over so I may not be alone. I
moved here from New York seven years ago. The China's were popular there in
the 80's because of a great radio station WLIR. I saw them 3 times in '86 and
was up at the front all three nights. I checked your personal collection, damn
that's a lot of Crisis music! I have the same picture disc for "Tragedy and
Mystery". That was my first record of theirs way back when. Anyway, thanks
for memories! Andy (AndrewJ992@aol.com)

I have been a great Fan of China Crisis since the early days.

I have seen them play live 5 times, 3 Times in Newcastle my home town and 2 in

Can you answer me this question.

I believe there is an limited edition cd which contains all of the B Sides,
including Scream Down At Me (my all time favourite CC track), dockland,
cucumber garden etc..

Does it really exists? and if so how can I get my hands on it. I have asked
time and time again but with no result. If it does exist which i believe it
does what is the catalogue number and where could I get a copy.

CC have been and will always be my number 1 band. Carry on the good work

Tomas I have found out about the Purple Pyramid Best Of China Crisis.
It's rather disappointing. First Purple Pryamid is a division of the US
goth label Cleopatra and the album is being distributed by Caroline
Distribution.

This release is simply a couple of tracks of of Warped by Sucess and a
couple of live tracks that's it! The track listing is as follows

1. hands on the wheel 2. everyday the same 3. without the love 4. thank
you 5. hard to be around 6. wishing time 7. good again 8. real tears 9.
does it pay 10. everyday the same (club mix) 11. Africa & white (live)
12. wishful thinking (live) 13.christian (live) 14. hands on the wheel
(live) 15. black man ray (live) 16.king in a catholic style (live)

I do not now where the live tracks are taken from but i imagine that
they are from the live disc from last year. So all in all it looks like
it's all previously released material repackaged and re-released.

Doesn't anyone In the record industry worldwide understand what China
Crisis fans really want is someone to re-issue the 2 disc A & B sides
greatest hits, or hell even a single disc of just the B-sides!

I know people ask you all the time but I'll ask again, do know of
anyone who has the limited edition 2 disc greatest hits and is willing
to sell it!. It would be the crown jewel of my cd collection. I have
been looking for this disc for nearly 8 years.I know you are in frequent
contact with other China Crisis fans if by any chance.... well you
understand, if you find one (any price!) let me know!

Well, keep in contact and i'll get any new info to asap on any future
CC news or releases Thanks your friend Rick

Hello Tomas,

details I gave you. Nice job.

Do you know about the new China Crisis release on the Cleopatra label?

Do you know if it is just a sampling of Warped By Success and Accoustically
Yours?

It mentions "live bonus tracks". I've got some of those tracks from their
old vinyl but Accoustically Yours is new stuff. Again, do you know ? If the
live tracks are from their old vinyl, I might get the CD. If it's from
Accoustically Yours, well.. I have those tracks three times already.

I found the info at http://www.musicblvd.com

After finding your web page, I have yet to find an answer to a question I have
regarding China Crisis and was hoping you could help me out. I have been a
fan for several years now, after first hearing the song "Working With Fire &
Steel" on a local Chicago radio station more than a decade ago. I bought all
of the albums I could find in stores here in the US as well as their recent
collection albums. (Very limited.) However, while I love the fact that each
and every album has a different sound and texture to it, I am extremely unfond
of their latest efforts presented in disc 2 of the Wishful Thinking cd. I
don't mean to sound naive, but information regarding CC is extremely limited
here in the heartland of America, and I don't even know any personal
information on either of the main gentleman aside from what's been printed on
the cd insert sleeves. My question is this, because it seems that EVERY song
that is on the second disc (Hands on Wheel, Always, Thank You, Without the
Love, etc) is about finding love and being in love and finding the perfect
mate, I have come to the conclusion that 1) either Gary or Eddie just came
out of the closet, 2) They've been out the closet since day one and have just
found the love of a lifetime or 3) Neither, but have decided to move away from
the geo-political influences of their earlier work. Any thoughts?

my first concert which was them at the dominion theatre in London. It was
fantastic and I took a bunch of red carnations for Garry aaahhhhhhhh I was in
love and at a tender age of thirteen. I then saw them whenever they played in
London, always as excited. When I moved to Stockton on Tees, I missed them and
a couple of years ago they played in a pub in the town. Absolutely fantastic as
ever and I still have and treasure the lolly pop that I got from Garry for
answering the questi
me thirteen years to do what I'd always wanted and that was to kiss Garry Daly
and I did that night, as you can imagine I didn't sleep properly that night I'd

I've got the records the CDs the photos and signed stuff too.

Never miss them when they play as they are an amazing band and great stage

Dear Tomas,

Thanks for your e-mail. Yes, they did mention the new album, which they said
would be out in the autumn. They played two or three tracks off it. They
opened with one which I hadn't heard before - I think it was called "Live a
blameless life", at least that was what the chorus was, and it was excellent -
the lead singer on it was one of the band though, the keyboard player, not Gary
- but he was good. Gary also used the melodica a lot in the concert - I know
this, as I used to play it at school!

I wish they had done a couple more old songs - Hampton Beach is my favourite,
but they didn't do it!. The crowd only really got bopping when they played
King in a Catholic Style, which they played twice - they played it as their
second encore. The slowies, such as Christian and Black Man Ray were done
really well.

Where are you Tomas, and when did you last see them play?

Regards,

Diane

Hei Tomas

Jeg fikk min ukentlige mail fra DotMusic i dag, listene fra England.

Og der står en veldig trist nyhet. Kevin Wilkinson har hengt seg - 41 år
gammel. Han ble funnet av kona Marilyn.

http://www.dotmusic.com/news/july99/99721news2040.asp

Jeg er selv gammel trommeslager og Kevin Wilkinson er en av dem jeg har hørt
mest på. Han var usedvanlig dyktig, virkelig en nytelse å høre noen som
spiller så enkelt - og som briljerte i veldig veldig små doser.

Hi Tomas,
great page. I saw the band this year at Guildford '99 festival and they
were superb. Wished I'd taken my MD along.
Anyway what I'm after if you or anyone else can help, is that apparently
Paul Roberts ( Stranglers vocalist) sung on some of the tracks during the
recording of the " Accoustically Yours" Release. Those tracks were omitted
from the CD but have they appeared anywhere else? Or does anyone have any
bootlegs or tapes of the gig?
Any info much appreciated.

First, I'd like to thank you for this web site. So ... THANK YOU!

I've always realized that there is so much good music out there that
I don't know about and this group, China Crisis, I only came across by
accident.

Back in the early 90's a local radio station was playing a lot of
"Retro" music on holiday
weekends. (Retro music is stuff from the 80's that never got the
attention it deserved ... until the 90's).

Anyway, I taped a whole bunch of what they played. Gradually over the
years listening to one of the songs
caught my eye - okay, ear. Probably because I live here in Arizona. And
because it's great!

Cut to chase...

Six years ago I began a book, always tentatively titled: Arizona Sky.
Only now is it finally, almost,
100% done. This song has always meant a lot to me and today I searched
for it on the web to mention the year
it came out. Well, I never expected to find a web site like this and I
can tell you that I will be
happily ordering CD's from this under known rock group.

It's a long story, just a quick thanks again for this page. Actually
reading the real lyrics to Arizona Sky
is a moment for me. If the story gets published I'll shot over a few
copies to you.

Cheers from the thirst of the earth!

Came across your site...read some of the letters, they appear to be somewhat
out of date.

Is there any news on a new album be produced this year, I most certainly
hope so.

I have been a great fan for as long as I can remember. Have been lucky
enough to the band perform live at 8 or 9 times over the last 12 years or
so.

I even had to go the extreme of send a cheque to a chap in Australia in
order to purchase the limited edition 'Best Of' double cd including all the
B-Sides. Of which 'Scream Down at Me' appears.. my favourite track of all
time.

No matter how many CD's I have.. alot.. China Crisis is played the most, I
don't know what it is about their music... I know... it's simply the Best.

Any news, please forward it on to me, to this address and DJJBudd@aol.com

Hi Tomas!

The name Arizona Sky came to me independently. I consider China Crisis'

same exact song title as a coincidence, however, one of this books
themes
is about ... any guesses? ... coincidence. So, to me, it was a
confirmation that
I was going in the write direction.

The song was on one of 15 cassettes I recorded on that weekend and only
gradually
did it emerge more and more as a real favorite of mine. I'm extremely
lucky that
the D.J. was in a talkative mood, because after the song he listed the
group and album.
If he didn't mention them by name I could forever be wondering who did
that great song.
Only now am I connecting that this is music that I really need to have.
It's weird,
some things take time.

But are also worth the wait. Later this week I'll order a CD or two of
theirs (through the link you provide).
I feel very lucky to be able to discover and enjoy some of this great
(hidden) music!

If my book ever gets published, then turns into a movie (yeah, right!)
I'll be sure to see if there is any way
China Crisis gets the recognition they deserve. But I'm only dreaming
now!!!

But as CC says, "no reason to give up on illusion," ...

Thanks again for the awesome site. It's bookmarked and I look forward
to learning a bit more
about this enigmatic group. I can't wait to hear what else they've
done!

Bye the way, speaking of coincidences, a lead character in the book is
"Tomas." I never
thought of it as a Swedish name and you are the first Tomas I've ever
met!

Neat.

Your beer listings make me jealous!

Congrats on the job done. We are doing a Top-20 Chart for our Y2K-Party and I

Viola! I found your site. THANK YOU! The reason I mention the date is
because I can't believe there have not been any e-mails to this site
since Dec. of '97!Is there no more interest in CC? Maybe you just
haven't posted any more e-mails or maybe you and all the fans out there
have disappeared and this web site is just a ghost , a remnant, a memory
of what once was? Sad.

Any way, if anybody cares, here's my (When Did You First Hear Of China
Crisis?)
Let's see whenever Flaunt The Imperfection was released that's when I
first heard of CC. I , at the time was a big fan of Carlos Santana and
he was going to be playing in Concord California. I kept checking the
entertaninment section of the paper to see if there was going to be an
opening band. For several weeks there was no mention of an opening band
and I was thrilled! 'Cause that meant Santana would play longer. Well a
week before the show I open the paper and it says "Just added:
China Crisis." opening for Santana. I was really P.Oed. I said "What!
Who the Hell
is this, this, th- CHINA CRISIS !!!!

So I go to the show and I fell in love with CC. What a great band. Most
folks at the show didn't really care for them, I mean they were polite
and all but I said to myself, hummm, this guys have something, and I 've
been a fan since. The way Eddie turns on his heel as he's playing guitar
I thought was pretty cool. I saw them a second time in San Francisco
during the "What Price Paradise" tour. i'll check out the other links to
CC and see if you fans are over there. Happy New Year to all the China
Crisis fans everywhere. Bye now.

P.S. Keep your dreams, your promises this Wishing Time of Year.

Tomas,

Happy New Year.

The band have just completed another fantastic residency at Ronnie Scott's,
Birmingham (early December). They were as wonderful as ever but with a twist -
new band members.

Don't worry, Gary and Eddie are still around but a new drummer, keyboard
player and guitarist all played a tight set with new songs to the fore. The new
album is due out in spring 2000 - look out for 'Sweet Delight' and 'Nothing
Changes' - absolutely beautiful tracks with immediate appeal. Other great new
songs include 'Adorable Lie', Whiteside Drive' and the brilliant 'Blameless
Life'.

1999 was a very sad year with the loss of Kevin Wilkinson.

2000 will be the year that CC continue to make people sit up and appreciate
their terrific work.

Keep up the great site - we CC fans like what you do.

Back in 1991 Suzanne and I went on holiday to Ibiza. In our hotel bar there was
a somewhat antiquated duke box. To my delight the selection included "Tradegy &
Mystery". As I had never heard the B-Side, "A Golden Handshake", I immediately
put it on. To my further delight the duke box was not working properly and
played the track in a continuous loop until the owners eventually came and
kicked it. I took great pleasure in selecting the song as I enjoyed a quick
drink before heading to the clubs leaving everybody else to enjoy the magic of
CC all night long. It rem

Tomas,
Love the new look to your DOCKLAND site. In my opinion, you've got the best CC site on the web. Thanks for the updated news regarding the new CD. I also was moved by your Kevin Wilkinson tribute. Still can't believe he's gone.

My name is Andy and I'm from Clearwater, Florida, USA. CC along with U2, Big Country, Simple Minds, ABC and The Human League, are my favorite bands, CC definitely being in the top three. Some people say I'm "stuck in the '80s", but what they fail to realize is that all the bands I've listed made great music well into the '90s to today, especially CC.

I have all CC albums, and many "best of" compilations, with the exception of the "unauthorized" editions we've seen lately. I'd say my favorite has to be "Flaunt the Imperfection" (traditionally), since it is the album that turned me on to them back in the mid '80s. Been a HUGE fan ever since. My pride-n-joy is my 2-disc edition of "Collection", which nowadays is difficult to acquire. I also prize my VHS of "Acoustically Yours"

It's been fun 'chatting' with you. Keep up the good work on the site; I'm particularly interested in news about the new CD - it's about time, huh? In case you're interested, I've started a China Crisis Fan Club on Yahoo! It's not big on members, and I don't have a lot of time to keep up with it, but it would be great if you perhaps you could post it in Dockland's "links" section, this way we'll get more people interested in the band and eventually get more information/adulation postings. In fact I have your site listed in my club's "links" section. I like the BB concept and if more people would join, there would be a lot more great CC discussion, especially with the new album coming out. Here's the link to my Yahoo! China Crisis Fan Club:

Thanks Tomas for your dedicated work on your site. The quality shows.

videos (Christian, Working with fire and steel, Wishful thinking, Black man
Ray & King in a catholic style) but don't know who directed any of them. I
was wondering if you would have any such information, and maybe a more
complete list of the videos they've made ? Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Alex S. Garcia.

PS.
You would be credited for your help, of course :-)

Hei Tomas

Vet ikke om du har lest det, men jeg så på nettet for noen uker siden at
China Crisis hadde brutt opp.

inkludert middag)

Noe nytt om CD-planene?

Hi, Tomas. No problem with Gary's email. I understand
it. I've got a question for you: do you know if CC
have
ever been touring in Spain? Answer to it, please.
And now, another thing. I play keyboards and guitar,
and I have a band with some friends, called (you
guessed it!): IN PELVIS. I can play a number of songs
of China Crisis: Christian, Are we a worker, Fire and
Steel, Wishful Thinking, Wall of God, Tragedy and
mistery,Arizona Sky... I could send the chords fo some
of them and you could publish them in your Dockland
site. The problem is that I don´t know how to make the
tabs. Anyway, here are the chords for christian:

Bm A
This is emotion, emotion less war
Bm A
a torn shirt and a long dead cause

........ (the same in the other verses)

CHorus: D A
I could lose myself in this honesty
Christian
D Bm A

repeat the same

(These are the guitar chords)

Bm: 2 D: 2 A: 0
3 3 2
4 2 2
4 0 2
2 0 0
2 0 0

My dream is playing all china crisis' songs with them!
Well, this is all today. Email me if you want me to
send you more "tabs" .Bye.

Hello Tomas,

How are you?

Just as well that you didn't travel to Wales for the gig in Narberth - it was
cancelled on the very afternoon that it was supposed to have taken place.

I was SO disappointed - perhaps it was too good to be true that the band
would be playing close to home. Unfortunately, Eddie has been confined to bed
along with 'the guitar player' according to the manager of the Queen's Hall
in Narberth.

The road manager called yesterday morning to say that the lads had been
playing on the Isle of Man of all places and returned with what sounds like
the 'flu. The road manager himself was also unwell. Although they offered to
play next week the venue is booked until Christmas......maybe I'll promote
another evening myself!! The manager of the Queen's Hall understood the
disappointment as his wife is a big fan, apparently.

Therefore I couldn't impress on the band the need to play in Malmo! However,
I have a poster for you if you want it (for the gig that never was). Would
you like it? If so, please let me have your address (if you want to pass it
on, of course) and I'll send it as soon as possible.

The site looks really impressive by the way.

Hello Tomas

Looking through your great site at chart positions - 'Every Day The Same'
reached the heady heights of no.99 on the UK singles charts!

A local radio station in Birmingham (BRMB) really gave the song a push and
even had the band playing on a bandstand in the middle of a busy shooping
centre...I bought 4 copies.......

Have you received the Narberth poster? Not the best posters in the world,
admittedly, but I guess the marketing budget is pretty low att CC HQ.

How did you get involved with China Crisis from Sweden ? Did they tour over
there in the 80's ? I have to admin that although i have got all their albums
and most of their singles & 12", i have never seen them live ! I did have
tickets once, a long time ago, but i was ill and had to give them to someone
else !
The gig in December is at a holiday camp, and is titled 'Millenium Music',
there are about 10 bands playing over 3 days, of which China Crisis are one.
I haven't booked to go yet as i might be in Florida instead, if i'm not
i'll be sure to go and see them.

Tomas,

No, Butlins Holiday Camps aren't really up there with the Liverpool Empire,
Ronnie Scott's or Town Halls - more like end of the pier shows, really,
especially when you are on the same bill as Dr and the Medics and 60's has
beens..... still, Christmas is coming and I suppose they have families to
feed.....

I think the band's agents are based in Rochdale, Lancashire and specialise in
'nostalgia acts', so that's maybe the reason why they have been lumped
together with such other bands at Butlins.

Don't you just wish that some A&R person would see the light. I am sure that
they would be successful - but if they no longer want it, as much as we all
want it, we can't make them can we?

Subject: Review Information For Dockland Site

Hello,

I noticed this review on your China Crisis site yesterday (see below). You
indicated that you weren't sure of the source, so I thought I'd help.

This review comes from the Trouser Press Record Guide, a book published in
the US. They've published several revisions of the book over the last 15
years or so. As this review runs through Diary Of A Hollow Horse, I suspect
that it came from the 1991 or the 1996 edition of the book. The 1996
version is the most recent installment.

Trouser Press was a monthly magazine that was published in the US in the
late 1970s / early 1980s. The magazine's editor, Ira Robbins, folded the
monthly in the early 1980s but continues to publish the book periodically.
Though he's not the sole writer for the book, I believe he is the author of
this section on China Crisis. If you're interested, I can check and get
back to you with the author's name. I am certain beyond a doubt, though,
that the review comes from this book.

Hope that helps.

I really enjoyed the Dockland site, by the way. I had not heard that Kevin
had committed suicide... that was a sad bit of information.

I'm curious if any CC fans have traded music through your site or if you
know of any fan-based "releases." Many of the band sites I've visited have
thriving communities of traders. Recently, a lot of sites have offered
compilation CDs put together by fans containing rare and / or out of print
material. I'd be very interested in any such China Crisis related items.
If you have any information, it would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Jay Hedblade

Hello Tomas,

Some trivia.......

On 28 June 1995, Gary and Eddie appeared on VH-1's 'Ten of The Best' series.
You may have seen this but if not, here are their choices of favourite
videos/songs:

Gary - Crowded House 'Weather With You' " 'cos it reminds me of when we were
in Hawaii"
Eddie - Tom Petty 'Don't Come Around Here No More'
G - Talk Talk 'Life's What You Make It' " Mark Hollis is a great songwriter"
E - Tom Waits 'In The Neighbourhood'
G - David Bowie 'Heroes'
E - Talking Heads 'Once In A Lifetime'
E - Donald Fagen 'Tomorrow's Girls'
G - John Lennon 'Jealous Guy' " The Beatles would have been nothing without
Lennon; sorry, Paul, George, Ringo" said Gary outside the Walker Gallery in
Liverpool.
E - Neil Young 'Harvest Moon'
G - China Crisis 'Every Day The Same'. Could have been a canny ploy to get
the video shown. I think this is one of the band's strongest songs lyrically
and was a real highlight of 'Warped By Success.

I remember watching the show and thinking what good taste they had!
The lads were filmed walking through Liverpool and stopping at various
locations throughout the city.

Take care,

Paul

Hello Tomas

More stuff (which you may already know)

Radio One sessions are, as I am sure you will know, a big deal in the UK.
With the likes of John Peel legendary series of sessions a big factor in
launching bands into the corrupt and shady world of the music business.

The China's have been involved in the following:

1/4/1982 - John Peel 'Seven Sports For All'; 'This Occupation'; 'Be
Suspicious' and 'Some People I Know To Lead Fantastic Lives' Gary (vocals,
bass, keyboards), Eddie (guitar, keyboards) and Dave Reilly (drums,
percussion) Maida Vale studio 4 Produced by John Owen Williams

25/8/1982 - David 'Kid' Jensen - Hanna Hanna; You Never See It; Animals In
Jungles; Reflections (recorded on 16 May 1982) at Maida Vale studio 4
Produced by Dale Griffin

27/1/83 John Peel - AGolden Handshake for Every Daughter'; Wishful Thinking;
Watching The Rainclouds; Greenacre Bay; Gary, Eddie, Gary Johnson (bass);
Kevin Wilkinson (drums); Steve Levy (oboe) (recorded 15/1/83 at Maida Vale
studio 4 Produced/engineered by Dale Griffin and Martin Colley

5/2/83 Janice Long - Scream Down at Me; Red Sails; No More Blue Horizons; No
Ordinary Lover recorded in Manchester by Tony Worthington at The Playhouse
Theatre, Hulme.

25/10/83 - David Jensen - Papua; No Ordinary Lover; WhenThe Piper Calls; The
Soul Awakening; all above band plus Derek Lovelady on synth and piano.
recorded on 20/10/83 at Maida Vale 4 Dale Griffin and Mike Robinson
engineered.
I remember listening with glee to this session - fantastic!!

18/3/85 - Janice Long - King In A Catholic Style; Gift of Freedom; Strength
of Character; Wall of God. Band: Gary ,Eddie, Gazza, Kevin, Brian McNeill
(keyboards).
Recorded on 10/3/85 at The Hippodrome, Golders Green., London.
Engineers - Barry Andrews and Peter Watts.

The band also played a live concert on Radio One in the middle of 1985 at
Bristol Colston Hall during 'Music Week'. I remember a bit of banter between
Gazza and Ian McNabb of The Icicle Works during a pop quiz.

Peel, Jensen and Long were all real enthusiasts; especially Janice Long.

Apologies if you already know about this or have the information.

I just wish the sessions could be made available commercially....for some
reason CC are one of the very few bands whose sessions have not been released.

Take care,

Paul

Hello Tomas

I just remembered it from a gig in Birmingham from a couple of years ago.

The band had to do two sets per night starting at around 10.30pm and
finishing at around 1.00am every night. Due to the time involved, I guess the
band felt relaxed enough to tell a few stories...the Edwyn Collins tale was
duly told.

Another one you might like to know is the existence of a Chinese cover
version of 'Black Man Ray' !! The version was played over the club's PA for
all to hear - quite odd to hear the words and music to this rather fine song
in a different language...don't think it sold enough copies for the
royalties to flow in.......

Hi :)

I have just come across your site. I am not a HUGE fan of China Crisis -
purely because I have not had the chance in my youth to get my hands on
their music. But I LOVED one song which I was able to get a (not so bad)
recording of from the BBC Top 20 Countdown in those days. I was brought up
in Malaysia and it is of course a whole lot different there now.

The song was Black Man Ray. It still sends shivers down my spine for some
reason and I actually made a file for school in black with their logo and
the band name on it which everyone asked me about. It was a thrill, but I am
still sad that I was never able to listen to all of their music.

Anyway, I have listened to stuff like Arizona Sky and numerous others since
then. Nothing compares to Black Man Ray when that was on the UK charts. It
made my teenage life :) Thank you for putting up your site!

hej tomas.....

why haven't you updated the page since may.......?

you probably know about audioparagon.com.....of course..........
that's where i read about a new china crisis album/release.....
this must have been in 1999 or something......!!!!
do you have any fresh squeezed news on that matter that you would like to share with
a young fan.....?

if you do.....then please let me know........

oh yeah......i bought the "tradegy and mystery" bootleg lp in denmark a while ago.......it has the same catalogue number and such as mentioned on your site.......but "when the piper calls" is actually "seven sports for all".......and "tokyo" is "animals in jungles".......?
the collector on audioparagon mention on the site that "tokyo" is an instrumental.......
is my one mispressed or something.....?
i'd like to know.....

tack så mycket

Just wanted to say thanks for your website! I have been trying to pin down a China Crisis song for a long time and I finally used your site to find it. It is Red Sails, a song I heard a long time ago and couldn't get out of my head. Thanks to your lyrics section, I was able to find the song.

Thanks again!

Hello Tomas,
Well my name is Paul Harrison and i live in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England.I have always been interested in anything China Crisis have done,i find them very good and interesting.I am also in a band, sometimes a duo or trio, and we cover some C/C material.
I went to see C/C play a few years ago in a town called Chester, they were great.
I also went back there a few months later to see them again, but this time i took a video camera and filmed the whole gig,it was a good night.
Also at the time of African and White being recorded i was in the studio with another band recording are selfs, and that was the first time i ever heard of them and there music.
I have also met the band several times and on one occassion i told them i covered some of ther songs myself, and Gary said that we probably do the song better than them themselfs. It was great night.
While i was filming them Gary kept turning to Eddie and saying, look theres a guy filming us, but he hasnt got his recording light on his camera so its not working. They called me over and told me,we all laughted and i told them ive turned the light off so that it wouldnt distract them, they all laughted at Gary then.
Well i must go now,i hope you dont mind me sending this to you.thanks for all the info on the band it was great to read all about them, thank you. Paul Harrison.

"african and white" is one such passionate work.

Hi Tomas,

Read your piece at rocknpop about China Crisis.

> China Crisis toured with Simple Minds in Europe during 1984,
> not recieving that good reviews for their live performance (at least not in Sweden).

Well then I think you had to be in the Rotterdam Ahoy during the first night of their two days overthere. China Crisis were great. They got a standing ovation, and had to come back for an encore. The next evening they weren't allowed to do it again by the SM.

I recorded the show later from Dutch radio and the DJ was telling that the band actually was much better that evening than the SM.

CC will tour again next year.

Hello Tomas

I was running a search on google and notice your site on CC. Very good I had no Idea the extensive amount of info about singles released by CC. I first heard about CC when I was in Duluth MN going to school...songs like Soul Awakening and Blue Sea captured me. Since the Midwestern USA was stuck on Prince and Posion....we forgot about the bands that slipped

away from our narrow minded magazine writers here. I still feel the same rush when I pop in a CC CD on my drives by LakeSuperior...especially with Blue Sea.

Well enough small talk I was wondering if you could let me know how I could purchase a copy of the 1990 released China Crisis

Collection on the Virgin Label......this 2CD set had a disc of B-sides that seem to be a whole new world of CC that will be great to listen to. I think it's listed under CDVX2613....you mentioned only 5,000 were made....sounds like it is really rare.

Take care and thanks for the great site on CC

Hello and happy new year to all fans and to the china
crisis themselves!

Two nights ago I was listening to the B-sides (in mp3
format, of course) couse I could'nt sleep, and i
thought a number of questions that i would like Gary
to answer, if you (Tomas from DOckland) kindly passed
them to him. I think this will satisfy the curiosity
of most of fans. Here go the questions:

1) What happened with Dave Reilly? Why didn't
Gary and Eddie continue with him in later albums?

2) How did they meet Gazza and Kevin?
3) Where are Gazza and Brian from and how old
are they? Where was the great Kevin from?
4) Who was driving the car when they crashed
(as the booklet od Diary~A Collection tells)?
5) What did Gary and Eddie do for a living
after leaving school and before starting china crisis?
6) What does Gary do for a living now?
7)Could you get a recent photo from Eddie or
Gary?
8) Could Gary tell us some stories about
memorable concerts he can remember?
9) Where are Gazza and Brian now?
10) will be a new china crisis' album in 2002?
11) Are we a worker?

Please, answer this email although you could not send
this questions to Gary. (Sorry if you don't understand
my "spanish" english!)

Have a nice year
Best wishes, Rafael Ruiz.

Subject: Residential Back Seat Band!

Hi,

Nice Site.

I've never been a great devotee of popcharts (not since the Beatles days anyway, I'm 54) but a song from the early eighties had stuck in my mind for years (about 20 in fact!) since hearing it while on holiday.

From time to time I caught sound of it , passing a pub juke box or on the radio. Somehow or other I never could catch the title or any details. Even if it was on the radio it would be one of those occasions when you miss the DJ's title anouncement and at the end they move onto the news or a commercial or whatever.

This got from being irritating and a bit intriguing to being nearly obsessive, my version of the holy grail! The only part of the lyric I could remember was "The residential back seat (or street) band" and the refrain "wake up"!

Tonight I've just called in at your site as part of a routine if infrequent trawl around the net for info, and there it is!! And by a pretty well known band too, even I've heard of them! The grail is found! Now I have to get the album.

You will see one of the reasons I failed to find it. I had misheard "The residential Black Sea band" (which may or may not make slightly more sense than my version!)

Lots of luck with yor site and musical pursuits and ........thanx!

Harry Hamill

Hello Tomas, Just thought I'd drop you a line to say how much I enjoyed reading you web site. I am a big fan of China Crisis and have seen them live many times from when they played 'Pickwicks' in Liverpool to promote the single 'Scream Down At Me' in about '82 right through to when they played the 'Kirkby Suite' in '98 (I managed to get Gary ang Eddie to sign a poster for my daughter). They truely are an outstanding live act.
I have African and White on the original Liverpool label (Inevitable Records) signed by the lads which is a treasured possesion. They also played a couple of gigs in the mid 90's at The Lomax Club in Liverpool city centre which is a very small place and was packed out, They were brilliant and had the place bouncing !!
Hoping to get to the Here and Now Show in Manchester (working permitting) Let you know how it go's.

All The Best,
Vinny Foster.

Hi again Tomas have spent my morning off looking at the site again...I was hoping to be superior and maybe send you details of singles/albums/cds that you dont have but off the top of my head it would appear you have the lot (and a couple more besides!). I have made some dodgy bootleg tapes of some recent shows however (ronnie scotts etc)......band were aware!

What I do have however is a lot of memorabilia which I dont think you have from looking at your collection details (I think it is still in my mums loft in Birmingham) including letters from China Crisis Management (on CC letter headed paper) loads of magazine articles, T shirts from every tour from '85 to last one in '98 a sweatshirt, a jacket! Loads of signed stuff also, badges, live photos etc etc etc.

If you want this stuff (recordings excluded) please let me know and I shall send it to Sweden so it can then be included on the site for everyone to look at rather than gathering dust. If not no problem.

I have also looked at your top 50 albums and was amazed to note you have a lot of my favourites in there also (spooky) when I tell people that "she was only a grocers daughter" by the blow monkeys is one of the finest records ever made they look at me like i'm a nutter! "Jordan" by Prefab Sprout is arguably the finest album ever made. Recommend you check out The Boo Radleys if you get chance.... awesome!.

Anyway will go now before you think I am a stalker! The site is outstanding, so much wish we had the net 15 years ago so I could of quenched my Crisis Thirst in those days!! Have also met the band (and made a complete drunken arse of myself in front of them) many times....if you want boring stories i'm the man!!!.

Well done mate

Martyn.
