Who Should be the Next Coach?

Now, say that by some miracle, Rollie magically disappeared off the face of the planet, or, more to the point, off the Convocation Center floor as Cleveland State's head coach. The question then arises, "Who would coach next?" Here is a list of top 5 FireRollie.com picks to succeed him at the helm.

Kevin Mackey
Current Job: Head Coach, Florida Sea Dragons (USBL)
Upside: He can coach, and coach well. The former CSU coach is the only guy to get the Vikes to the NCAA's. Plus, he has coached several minor-league pro teams in Fayetteville, NC, Atlantic City, and, most recently, Mansfield to championships.
Downside: Everybody hates him. This laundry list includes current CSU AD John Konstantinos and the NCAA, who nuked the program back in 1989 after Mackey violated recruiting rules. And lest we forget that nobody in Cleveland has forgiven him for getting busted in 1990 in front of a crackhouse with a prostitute.
Odds: 50-1. Better if either Konstantinos goes with Rollie or turns the page on ancient history.

Mitch Buonaguro
Current Job: Asst. Coach, Cleveland State
Upside: Buonaguro has head coaching experience. And he also has NCAA Tourney experience, as Rollie's assistant with Villanova and his own experience with Fairfield. If, by some twist of fate Rollie gets out of his contract, Buonaguro is the No. 1 choice as the next coach.
Downside: He's Rollie's appendage. Though he was at Texas A&M during Rollie's two-year reign of futilty with UNLV, Buonaguro has been by Rollie's side for at least a decade and a half. Chances are if Rollie gets broken off, so too will Buonaguro
Odds: 25-1. Even money if Rollie finishes his contract.

Shawn Hood
Current Job: Err, Between Jobs
Upside: Hood has been waiting for a head coaching job for years. The former Wisconsin and Rhode Island assistant recently interviewed for the vacant Kent State job, and he applied for the Cleveland State gig back in 1996. Hood knows the Viking program, both as a player and an assistant coach under Mackey and Mike Boyd.
Downside: Are you wondering why he's currently unemployed? It's amazing what you can find on the Internet. According to an AP report on Sportserver.com, Hood resigned from URI amid allegations that he inappropriately touched a 9-year old child. Oops!
Odds: 25-1 if he beats the rap. No chance in hell if he doesn't.

Duffy Burns
Current Job: Head Women's Coach, Cleveland State
Upside: Duffy knows Cleveland State. He also knows a little something about men's basketball. Among the items on his resume is an assistant coaching stint with current Memphis coach and former NBA coach John Calipari. He also has one other advantage on the group: His players actually like him! Plus, Duffy is a personal favorite of mine.
Downside: (Updated 1-30-2002) Duffy is currently the women's coach. Unfortunately, there was an incident with two of his seniors, bringing accusations on verbal abuse and lack of discipline from former players. Needless to say, Duffy's got some problems.
Odds: 500-1 - Duffy will be happy to keep his own job after this season.

Frank "Happy" Dobbs
Current Job: Asst. Coach, Cleveland State
Upside: Dobbs also had head coaching experience with Brown. He may also be a likely successor to Rollie if he retires and Buonaguro doesn't want the job. Dobbs may also be a bit more popular with the fans.
Downside: Dobbs didn't exactly set the world on fire when he was at Brown. His best season was a break-even 13-13 mark in 1994-95. Also, he played under Rollie at 'Nova. You may see Dobbs go the same way as Buonaguro if Rollie gets dropped.
Odds: 100-1. You could bet on him, but don't expect to get your money back.

No matter who you think is the best guy for the job, one thing is certain... It's better than Rollie!
