Litha (Lee-tha) is the sabbat marking the height of the power of the God. It is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. In mythology, it is the second day of the year when the Holly King and the Oak King battle for power. This time, the Holly King is victorious. He rules the waning year.

Because it is the day with the most Sun in the year, Litha can be a very good day for performing certain types of magic. All those spells which rely on the power of the God or on solar energy will be very effective. Because the waning year is beginning, magick that causes things to decrease is also best begun.

Celebration Suggestions

  • Reenact the battle of the Oak King and the Holly King. Many pagan communities do this on the solstice, and it can be very entertaining. Put as much flair and theatrics into the production as you'd like. This can be a fun activity for children as well.
  • Spend some time in the Sun. Many wiccans wake at dawn on this special day to greet the sun on the occasion of its rising.
