Pilot Light is set in the region of Aruto. Think of it as just another region like Kanto, Johto or Hoenn. It contains its own gyms and Pokémon League, although these haven't actually appeared in the story. It has its own native and introduced pokémon species whose rarities vary from what they are in other regions (for example, totodiles are quite common whereas there are no sentrets). Vulpixes and ninetales, the central pokémon of the story, are a species introduced by trainers and so are quite rare.

The places visited so far in Aruto are:

Spectrum City - Kit's hometown. Residential areas consist mostly of apartment buildings, however the city quickly turns rural on the outskirts, with a few farms surrounding it.

Route 72 - The route between Spectrum City and Genesis Bushland.

Genesis Bushland - Cam's home. The bushland is unprotected so trainers often come here to capture pokémon. The bushland is also home to Connor's vulpix pack, but hardly anyone knows where it is.

Extant Cave - An unexplored cave within Genesis Bushland. Unknown to humans, the cave meets with the Extant River which leads to Eustacia's secret garden.

Eustacia's Garden - A hidden garden in the middle of the Genesis Bushland, where pokémon can visit to be healed by Eustacia the chansey.

Taylor's farm - The farm owned by Taylor's father. Located next to the Genesis Bushland, on the outskirts of Spectrum City.

Aruto National Park - The year nine students of Spectrum High School go camping here. It is an ancient site sacred to the native Arutonians, and contains cave paintings depicting some of their legends. The pokémon in the National Park are protected - it is illegal to capture them.

Aurous City - A city near Spectrum City where Kit competes in the Rainbow Tournament.

Sulfur Rainforest - A rainforest Team Magma shows an interest in.

Mount Cinder - A dormant volcano, which freezes over during the story.
