Ripping the Stiles The stiles are the main members of the door frame. These pieces need to be straight, both on the edge and face if the door is to fit properly in the door jamb. Don't cut them to length until the door is completely assembled. Allow an extra 6" - 10" in length for "horns". The horns on the stiles serve to protect the assembled door from damage in the shop. They will be sawn off when the door is cut to final length just prior to applying the finish.
Ripping the Mullions and Rails The mullions , rails and panels need to be ripped to rough width also. While the saw is setup to rip, perform all of the remaining rip cuts to separate the various pieces from the timber.
Time for a Sanity Check After I have finished cutting out all of my pieces to rough size, I place them on the assembly table, and sometimes rearrange them to achieve the best presentation.
