The Gang

These are the eight main characters in the series. The anime calls them the "Eight Paladins", the chosen ones that have the capability to defeat Daimaou once and for all. Although Chacha, Riiya and Shiine are really the series main focus, being the ones that can make Chacha become Magical Princess Holyup, the others also have important parts. Seravi and Dorothy are the trio's teacher and guardians while Yakko, Marin and Suzu are the trio's classmates and friends who can help them when they are in need.

Chacha
A princess in hiding, Chacha lives with her Teacher Seravi in a house at the foot of Mochi-Mochi Mountain. She is still a beginner magician, which is unfortunate for her and her friends because her spells almost always end up in a disaster of the biggest kind. Her adventures began when her teacher gives her the Princess Medallion, which along with Riiya's bracelet and Shiine's ring, transforms her into Magical Princess Holyup. She is a very cheerful girl, who likes everybody and everybody likes her (well, maybe except for Yakko and Marin, who consider her their "rival"...more on that later...). Both Riiya and Shiine are in love with her and will do anything for her, even tolerate each other. But sadly for the two, she considers the two boys as her best friends and not boyfriend material. But then, they're still kids...maybe later when they grow up... She also tends to be a little bit (well, not just a little bit...) foolish and dimwitted. The only person who is more dimwitted than her is Riiya.
Riiya
Riiya is a wolf boy, that is, he can transform himself into a very kawaii (cute) little white wolf, but is sometimes mistaken for a dog (Riiya hates it when that happens). Possessing the Bracelet of Courage given by Seravi, he helps Chacha transform into the Magical Princess. Though his grandfather Adon and his many brothers live in the nearby Mochi-Mochi Mountain, Seravi acts like a sort of guardian to Riiya, with Riiya living with Seravi and Chacha (but not peacefully, they sometimes don't get along with each other). Like Shiine, Chacha's other best friend, Riiya loves Chacha. He is courageous and strong, and is fun person to be with. Riiya's favorite pastime is eating. If somebody tells him to go jump from a mountain for a dish of curry, he'll probably ask which mountain. He is also probably the dumbest person in the whole show. When the gang were to take an exam, it took him a whole day (and night) just to accidentally answer a question even kindergarten kids can do.
Shiine
Shiine is the only member of the trio who is relatively sane. He possesses the Ring of Hope, which enables him to help Chacha transform into Magical Princess Holyup. Like Chacha, he is training how to be a magician with Dorothy as his teacher. He lives with her in her castle, at the foot of Urizuri mountain, a few miles away from Mochi-mochi mountain. His favorite pastime is cleaning which which is great for Dorothy since she can't do any housework whatsoever. Shiine is a responsible, well-behaved and intelligent boy, which is why, I think it's so strange that he fell in love with an airhead like Chacha. But we all know love moves in the strangest ways. Unfortunately for him, between him and his rival Riiya, it seems to me that the cute little wolf is the one winning Chacha's heart. Poor Shiine...but then, there is Suzu. He is also the son of the Silver Knight, Access, who will have an important role in the anime.
Seravi
Seravi is the one who teaches Chacha how to use her magic. He lives with Chacha and Riiya in a small house (which he built himself) at the foot of Mochi-mochi Mountain. He is also the World's Greatest Magician, to the Dorothy's annoyance. Every inch of him is irritatingly perfect, from his shining white teeth down to hem of his always white robes. Failing is a totally alien idea to him--he can do very much anything, better than anybody else. In the words of Pontius Pikapon, the former World's Greatest Magician, "Seravi is a monster!". Seravi is madly in love with the golden-haired Dorothy but hates the pink-haired one, which is weird since it's all the same Dorothy only with a magically different perm. He is a good teacher, Dorothy even accuses him of being too protective of Chacha. Whenever Chacha and her friends are in trouble, he usually helps them in a thinly disguised, "friendly-neighborhood" persona. It's really amazing how the kids especially Chacha couldn't see through the poor disguises, it must be some kind of magic... He was also a knight and was the one which took Chacha away to safety when Daimaou invaded the kingdom.
Dorothy
Dorothy is Shiine's teacher and a great magician in her own right. She lives with Shiine in her castle at the foot of Urizuri mountain, some distance away from Mochi-mochi Mountain. A megalomaniac (the word of the day, kids!), her greatest dream is to become the World's Greatest Magician and rule the world! The only problem is her rival since childhood, Seravi. How on earth can anybody defeat somebody who is inhumanly perfect? But the truth of the matter is no matter how much they fight and annoy each other, deep inside, the two are actually in love with each other! They are just too stubborn to follow their hearts. Isn't that romantic? Another important aspect of Dorothy is her relationship with her student, Shiine. While Chacha and Seravi have a great teacher-student relationship, Dorothy and Shiine has a deeper bond than that. In fact, Dorothy regards Shiine as her son and Shiine loves Dorothy like his real mother. Shiine sometimes even calls Dorothy "mother" and Dorothy sometimes calls Shiine "my son".
Yakko
Yakko is Chacha, Riiya and Shiine's classmate in Section Banana at Urara's. Like Chacha and Shiine, she is also a magician-in-training. She specializes in making magic potions, concoctions and brews (they are usually labeled as "Magic Potion Letter Something"), which she keeps in the numerous pockets of her black robe. Because of that, she knows a lot about plants and herbs that could used in magic. Yakko is totally in love with Chacha's teacher, whom she calls her "Prince Seravi". Anything can trigger her into having one of those Seravi daydreams, during which, she would become oblivious to anything else. Yakko hates Chacha and considers her as her rival just because Chacha lives with her Teacher Seravi. She had a mean temper but that is just skin deep. She could become a good friend whenever she want to be. Another student in Urara Magic School, Kyle, is in love with Yakko, and follows her around, but unfortunately she only have eyes for her darling Prince Seravi.
Marin
Marin is a mermaid who joined the gang after falling very mad, err, madly in love with Riiya. She enrolled in Urara's, hoping to catch her "darlin' Riiya", only, she enrolled in the wrong section. But that doesn't prevent her from sneaking into Section Banana and chase Riiya around. Riiya tries to protect himself Marin by immediately transforming into his wolf form, but that doesn't help at all. You see, Marin doesn't know that Riiya can become a wolf (or more probably, she don't want to believe Riiya is part wolf). So when she manages to grab Riiya, instead of a blue-haired boy, she would see a white wolf in her arms -- which she would promptly tortures and slams/throws/kicks away, thinking that it is Chacha's pet and Chacha is making fun of her. Marin hates Chacha, her "rival" for Riiya's affection and can sometimes be seen plotting Chacha's end with Yakko. Though admittedly a pretty girl, she is sadly vain and petty. If the gang gets in a fight, she would just crawl into her shell shelter thing and hide until after Chacha can do her magic princess transformation and stop the bad guy. Marin can do a little magic using her magic wand, but its magic is limited in such a way that it can only summon sea stuff.
Suzu/Orin
The reason for the double name is that in the original, untranslated Japanese version and in the manga, the character's name is Orin. But when Cartoon Network translated it into English, they changed her name into Suzu (which I preferred to use from now on, being more familiar to that name). Suzu is another student in Urara Magic School and is also enrolled in Section Banana. She is a ninja and is quite an expert in all things that a ninja could do. She is lightning fast and very agile and is adept in using all the ninja weapons and tools, especially her sword. She is an expert in concealing herself and spying on others (not that she do that for really bad reasons, just to spy on her friends and most especially on Shiine). In fact, it took some episodes later for Chacha and the gang to learn about Suzu even though Suzu's been on the same class everyday. Suzu is a sweet girl and is terribly shy. Whenever Shiine would talk, smile or even glance in her way, she would always blush furiously. Suzu is very much in love with Shiine, but unlike Marin or Yakko, don't chase Shiine around or hates Chacha, who is sort of her rival. In fact, she considers Chacha as one of her bestfriends. Everybody likes Suzu because she is sweet and Suzu likes everybody. Shiine probably knows Suzu loves him, but he doesn't show he knows her feelings for him. Suzu lives with her grandfather, an old ninja master, who taught her everything that she knows at being a ninja.
