Amid the clamour around healthcare reform, a quiet but perhaps more momentous revolution is occurring in people’s attitudes toward healthcare. Homeopathy is re-emerging as a viable and more natural alternative to allopathic medicine. The seeds of this two hundred year old practice are starting to take root in Western thought and are slowly pushing their way back through the hallowed ground of science.

Homeopathy was conceived in 1796, by a German physician and chemist, Samuel Hahnemann. Based on the healing power of good diet, fresh air, exercise and natural remedies, Hahnemann introduced a radical alternative to conventional medicine. Early in the 19th century homeopathic medicine had become the most widely used healing system in North America. Replaced by the advent of modern clinical medicine, it was not until the early 1980s that homeopathic medicine began to grow in popularity again. |
Homeopathy A complementary disease treatment system in which a patient is given minute doses of natural drugs that in larger doses would produce symptoms of the disease itself. |

Based on three fundamental concepts; the law of similars, the single medicine, and the law of infinitesimals, homeopathy’s primary focus is on disease prevention and health enhancement. The first principle, commonly referred to as the phenomenon of “like cures like” or the law of similars, states that an ailment can be alleviated by a substance that, in greater doses, would produce symptoms paralleling that disease. For example, the symptoms associated with cutting onions; runny nose, watery eyes and coughing, are also seen in people suffering from Hay Fever. Therefore, based on the principle of “like cures like”, diluted onion extract will diminish or terminate Hay Fever symptoms.
|
The second principle, consistent with classical homeopathy, is based on the belief that one remedy will cure the whole person; their physical, mental and emotional symptoms. “It [homeopathy] recognizes that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony with the whole person and it is the patient who needs treatment, not the disease.”Becoming Canada' |
The word Homeopathy stems from the seeds of the Greek words homios and pathos, which mean “similar sickness”.
|
Hahnemann established the law of infinitesimals (in~fin~i~tes~i~mals), the third principle, when negative side effects were observed in patients where large amounts of substances had been prescribed. Through series of experiments he discovered that minute strengths of a medication produced more effective results. The principle was therefore named: the law of infinitesimals meaning ‘close but greater than zero” or a very small amount. |

The Budding Popularity of Homeopathy
Contrary to previously held beliefs people are beginning to realize that conventional medicine cannot solve all of our health problems and in some instances can contribute more harm then good. Public awareness is establishing that many alternative remedies are more effective, economical, and less invasive than some conventional medical treatments. Is Homeopathic Medicine safe? The World Heath Organization’s (WHO) guidelines for the assessment of Alternative Medicines, states that you can reasonably assume licensed alternative providers use treatments and techniques which are safe when used appropriately. It is recommended that if you choose to use alternative medicines and are unsure about a particular treatment, that you ask your medical practitioner as well as other medical professionals for as much information about the treatment as necessary to distinguish if that particular treatment is right for you and your family. |
Homeopathic Medicine has been useful when treating such ailments as colds and flu’s by helping to re-establish normal functioning of the immune system and because homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and present no known side effects they can be used by the whole family. Homeopathic medicine can be effective in treating children’s illnesses because they are natural and gentle substances that work with the body’s own natural healing power to strengthen the immune system. Of all the holistic medical modalities, homeopathy is the only option without drug interactions, contraindications, or side effects. Unlike herbal remedies and supplements, which may only have structure/function statements on their labels, homeopathic medicines cannot be sold without a drug claim. According to the World Health Organization, homeopathy is the second largest medical system relied on for primary care in the world today. |
Homeopathy for your Child
Homeopathic medicines are useful in that they are 100% non toxic, they show no adverse effects, they do not impede digestion, nor do they lower resistance power or produce allergies. Children may become ill due to having a low resistance power. Homeopathic medicine enhances the child’s defence power, their immune system, which enables the child to fight off infection more successfully. |
A Word of Caution …
Homeopathic remedies should only be taken when prescribed by a medical doctor/ homeopathic physician. Doses are the same for adults, seniors and children over the age of eight. However, children under the age of eight should be given less depending on the remedy. Children under the age of two should receive all medications diluted in water. Be certain that all homeopathic medicine you are prescribed is diluted to at least 4 CH as anything under that level of dilution could be toxic. |
