Complementary Medicine

Complementary medicine, encompasses various healing techniques, that when used appropriately and in conjunction with conventional Western medicine can contribute to overall good health. The focus of complementary medicine is to heal by curing not only the disease, but the whole person: their mind, body and spirit.
In an age of amazing technological advancements and phenomenal developments in the health sector, it may be difficult to believe that the ancient practice of Ayurveda may still be a viable method of enhancing your health. Where doctors can repair or replace a damaged heart is there still a place for the natural healing powers of herbs? Is there a need for meditation when there are psychiatrists who can prescribe Prozac? Within the past century a ‘cure’ has been concocted for nearly every ailment imaginable, but the preventative power of nature and the less invasive methods of healing have become forgotten among the esteemed pages of medical journals. Nature; however does not go out of style, and through the pollution of our technologically advanced society it has re-rooted itself.

There are countless complementary therapies. They all present different methods for healing and different philosophies on what is healthy. Most; however, follow a holism ideal: to look at the whole person instead of concentrating solely on the ailment. Holism considers the mind, body and spirit a single entity and that good health is a positive state, not merely the absence of disease. Prevention is therefore a main focus of the holistic approach. Good diet, frequent/regular exercise and positive emotional energy are the foundations upon which most complementary therapies are built.
“ It is more important to know the person that has the disease than the disease the person has.”
