1. The
willingness of Geoscientists to pay more attention to our future generation
should be improved.
There is still poor consideration
among Geoscientists on the education program of our future generation.
Most of Geoscientists are only interested in their research works, such
as on how to optimize the exploration of natural resources, instead of
thinking the education plans for the future generation. Therefore, we are
Geoscientists, should start to shift our way of thinking, by putting more
attention to the education program in Geoscience, that may significantly
influences the behavior of our future generation in saving and looking
after our earth.
2. Geoscience
for public outreach should be developed
In many countries in the
world it is found that Geoscience is not quite as popular as other science.
Indeed, many people believe that Geology is part of the problems in the
world instead of part of the problems' solution. That is why the important
role of this particular science to contribute to the development programs
are still being ignored. Therefore, Geoscientist should enhance their communication
to the public. Indeed, Geoscience should be given in more visual and attractive
ways for children at school. A good lesson could be learned from the American
Geological Institution which establish the Outreach communication program
such as by introducing Earth Science Week 2000 Program in USA.
3. Shifting
method of teaching is required
A shifting method of teaching
should be considered. More interactive and active teaching method with
more practical works and case studies should be provided to the students.
The lessons from Dept. of Geology, at Dickinson College, USA and from Dept.
of Geological Eng. at Gadjah Mada University Indonesia highlight the importance
of motivating students to learn how to learn and conducting
self-development for their-own knowledge, instead of providing
too much knowledge by assuming that the students' head as empty vessels.
Providing the research-based project for student may be worthwhile to challenge
student to learn how to learn and developing life-long learning skills.
4. The
need for integrated learning process and dynamic cyclic thinking
According to the research
conducted in Israel, it is found that many teacher still unable to explain
the simple natural process (i.e. hydrological cycle) by dynamic cyclic
thinking. Thus, the students just partially understanding the process and
unable to analyze integrally all components in the environmental systems.
This might be one reason why any development program in any environment
in the world is commonly conducted sectoral/ partial without any consideration
with other components in the environmental system. That is why, the integrated
assessment still quite difficult to be established in any development program.
Accordingly, this can be seriously sacrify our earth live cycle. Therefore,
shifting paradigm on the learning method at school and universities are
urgently required to move towards more integrated learning process and
more dynamic cyclic thinking.
5. Another
challenge…
Another challenge for the
Geoscientist teacher is to move the method of teaching by giving very basic
knowledge to more right direction.
