The Adventures of Jennifer Bear
Jennifer Bear is La-Qual-By's mascot. Here you can read about her monthly adventures.
SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2002 (TROOP 1747)
Hi, my name is Jennifer Bear. I just spent the month with Brownie Troop 1747. I sure had a fun month, let me tell you about it.
I started the month going to the troops meeting. During the meeting the girls voted on my name. The girls had so many different names picked out and finally decided on Jennifer (after a heads down count). That evening the girls earned a dance Try-It, and guess what? I earned one too! Those brownies sure have a lot of moves...they wore me out.
In the beginning of October I attended recruitment night at Sherwood Forest. I saw a lot of the girls there that I had seen at Sherwood Forest's open house! It was exciting to see familiar faces.
A week later the girls took me to Seattle with them. Little did I know at the time we were going to a tv studio! After the long drive to seattle we finally arrived at KOMO studios. They used us upstairs in a really big elevator (the brownies said an elephant could fit in it). I got to see in the audience with the girls for the taping of the "Northwest Afternoon" show. Next the girls and I did a Public Service Announcement and got to be on TV!!. Don't tell anyone, but I got really nervous when the camera's started rolling! The brownies must have known because they gave me a big hug!
The next adventure with the girls was visiting a pumpkin patch, unfortunately I did not get to go out with them....they were afraid I would get dirty! I probably would have since several of them came back with dirt on their shoes and hay in their hair!
My last stop on my stay with Troop 1747 was the Traveling Girl Scout Store! I picked up my dancercize Try-It. Thank you Troop 1747 for naming me and turning me into a TV Star.
OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2002 (TROOP 2153)
November 1, 2002: Tonight I spend the evening at Lakota Junior High School celebrating the birthday of Juliette Low. It was great fun! I had the opportunity to learn about girl Scouting and the founder, Ms. Low. I also got to share a snack with dozens of Girl Scouts from all over federal Way. best of all, I learned how to play basketball(just like Juliette's first troop of Girl Scouts_. What a night!
November 9, 2002: I joined Troop 2153 for the Veteran's Day Parade. We were towards the end of the parade so I had to wait a VERY LONG TIME but I was patience and had a chance to bond with many of the Brownies as I was passed from hand to hand.
My next outing was training at the Big Deal. I attended Leadership and Troop Camp training sessions with Brownie Leader, Gayle Adams.
November 18: Troop 2153 had their Investiture and Award ceremony. They welcomed three new girls to scouting and their troop, three returning scouts were welcomed as Brownies new to their troop. Troop 2153 pledged themselves to scouting for another year. Awards and patches were given to all and snacks were shared.
December 2: I joined the girls for their meeting. They made fleece scarves for Toy Fair. The Brownies made 26 scarves to donate to the needy in the area. They also began working on the Caring and Sharing Try-It and the girls drew names for their secret pal gift exchange.
My final activity with Troop 2153 was Christmas Caroling. We joined Karen Foster's Junior Scouts in sharing holiday cheer and songs with families living around the school. We then met for refreshments at the school.
DECEMBER 2002 AND JANUARY 2003 (TROOPS 1869 AND 1663)
I was lucky enough to go to the meetings with two troops, Troop 1869 and 1663. My first visit was to the Junior Troop (1869). We met on December 17th and I was invited to join their holiday party. We played games, had snacks and opened presents from our secret buddies. We also went Christmas caroling. I had a lot of fun, but it was a little freezing outside.
My next visit was to the first grade Brownie Troop (1663). The brownies sure have a lot of energy. We made awesome friendship bracelets and learned all about how to sell Girl Scout cookies. We were all very lucky to have two experienced girls from the Junior troop giving us their tips on the best way to sell cookies. They had many good tips, but the brownies sure are cute, so I bet they are going to do ok.
On my last visit, I was back with the Junior Troop again. They worked hard making calendars of all the upcoming events. They also discussed their plans for selling Girl Scout cookies. While it may not have been the most adventuresome meeting I have ever attended, sometimes Girl Scouts just have business that needs to be taken care of. I am looking forward to my next visit.
JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2003 (TROOP 2266)
WOW! I have never been with such active high-energy girls as Troop 2266 Daisy Troop. I attended two meetings with these eight girls and I think I now need to hibernate for quite some time. At the first meeting on January 20, we earned our violet "Be a Sister to every Girl Scout" Petal. Our leader read a story about being friends with a girl at school who had no friends. We also learned about SWAPS and we painted daisy SWAPS for Thinking Day. Then we got wild and crazy playing "Daisy, Daisy, Juliette".
At the second meeting, we earned the red petal "Courageous and Strong", by making a collage and by completing a checklist in the Daisy coloring book. Once again, we played some really fun games like "Silly Walks", "Daisy to Daisy" and their favorite, "Daisy, Daisy, Juliette". I enjoyed having fun with this troop. I have never been hugged so much in my life.
