Early one spring morning in 1968, the lonely countryside outside of the small town of Mojave California, a NASA space probe has gone awry. Falling out of orbit the radioactive probe heads for earth, re-entering the earth's atmosphere in blinding speed. A thundering earth shattering crash is felt throughout the town and the surrounding area, as a large dust cloud rises and spreads - covering several square miles.
The awakened towns people, it's sheriff, deputies- and others ride out to the scene, a large crater lies before their eye's, smoldering debris covers the land. Shortly after- sirens and helicopters descend upon the area. Military personnel in trucks pull up pushing the towns people back. Men in suits jumping from the helicopters yelling orders here and there. "GET BACK--GET BACK, CORDON OFF THIS WHOLE AREA, IT IS RESTRICTED TO EVERYONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE GOVERNMENT CLEARANCE". |
Others come in coveralls from head to toe, their heads encased in shields and breathing apparatus on their backs. Using gloved hands they start cleaning the area of all the debris, loading it onto waiting closed trucks. Within several hours all that's left is the hole in the ground.
Military flat bed trucks roll in with fencing and razor barbed wire, for several hundred feet out from the crater a fence is enclosed circling it, many signs are hung. NO TRESPASSING - GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED AREA - ELECTRIC FENCE - BEWARE - DANGEROUS A small office and barracks are built, and the area patrolled by armed military in jeeps, 24 hours a day. Within a short time the excitement wears off, and Mojave returns to it's usual serene quiteness of the small town in the desert. UNTIL... |
