November 8th

Glenswilly, the Donegal IFC won their way to the semi-final of this season’s Ulster club IFC when they came back from being eight points down to win a dramatic and thrilling encounter over Aghaloo on a scoreline of 1-14 to 2-8.

In what was a very competitive encounter all through the Aghaloo side had both their midfielders Felim Og Gildernew (double yellow) and Stephen Beattie sent off in a second-half that saw Glenswilly’s Charlie Bonner also get his marching orders.
,br> First-half goals from Stephen Donnelly and Martin O’Neill saw the Aghaloo side go in at the interval in a healthy position leading by 2-6 to 0-4. However, the Donegal champions upped their game in the second-half and turning on the style they slowly but surely overhauled their opponents with a succession of points together with a crucial goal from Daniel Gallagher which gave them a deserved three points win at the finish.

Aghaloo had the misfortune of missing a penalty kick in that second-half when Leslie Stevenson sent his kick crashing against the crossbar, and that was the end of their provincial challenge.

Glenswilly scorers – G. McFadden 0-5, D. Gallagher 1-2, G. McGrenera and C. Kelly 0-2 each; D. McGinley, Ciaran Bonner and B. Canning 0-1 each.

Congratulation to the Senior Team on winning the Intermediate Final on Sunday evening last in O’ Donnell Park Letterkenny, final score being Glenswilly 1-12 Cloughaneely 1-7. Surely the greatest moment in the clubs history, it was a terrific display from all the team who never gave up even when they went in at the break two points down. There were heroes all over the pitch but it was Big Geard McGrenra the veteran forward from Churchill who sealed the victory with a fine goal. There were few dry eyes at the final whistle among the Glenswilly faithful who played there own part by cheering the team on from start to finish. Huge celebrations took place that night with a string of cars a mile long following the team bus around the Glen led by Joseph Kelly surely the proudest man in Glenswilly. Founding member of the club Manus McFadden flew in that morning from Boston and Charlie Bonner was also over from Chicago for the game with many others coming from afar to be there for this historic occasion.

Hard luck to the reserves who lost by a point to Urris in the reserve semi-final, but surely they should have won this game; they missed so many chances in the second half. The game went into extra time and the Glen men could not get those couple of scores to clinch it, but best of luck to Urris now in the final.

But the story of the day was the senior victory and how far the club have come in a short period of time playing in the senior championship next year for the first time. A Dvd of the final is available @ € 25 contact the treasurers for a copy.

August 19th

Both our senior and reserves progressed to the semi-final’s of the intermediate championship on Saturday evening last in Termon. The reserve team overcame a stubborn Downings team, and although things were tight at half-time the Glen pulled away to win by 2-11 to 0-7, best for Glenswilly were Pj Gallagher, Paul McCool and Brendan Gallagher.

In the senior game Glenswilly played some fine football with Captain Ciaran Bonner leading by example and driving them on, this game was as good as over at half-time. To be fair to Downings they out scored Glenswilly in the second half but it was a case of damage limitation and there always seemed to be another gear in Glenswilly. The final score was Glenswilly 3-14 Downings 0-12. Best for Glenswilly were Ciaran Bonner, Barry Molloy and Darren McGinley.

Glenswilly now progress to the semi-final where they will meet the winners of Naomh Ultan or Robert Emmets.

On Saturday night the reserve team travelled to Castlefin to play Burt in the intermediate reserve play-off, and came away with a hard earned victory. A well taken goal by the impressive Cathal Gallagher was the highlight of this rather dull affair. Best for the Glen were Paul McCool, Cathel Gallagher and Paddy McFadden.

The senior team beat St.Michael’s in the league on Sunday by four points. This was always going to be a tight game with both sides needing the points; Ciaran Bonner and Geard McGrenra were the difference between the teams with McGrenra scoring an impressive 1-6 and Bonner scoring 1-1. Gary McFadden scored the other two points for the Glen, final score Glenswilly 2-9 St.Michael’s 11 points.

Our seniors travelled to Ardara on Saturday night to play Naomh Conaill in the league and both teams lost. The reserves played some fine football in the first half and went in at the break level, and were well in the game right up to the last five minutes when Naomh Conaill pulled away. Kevin Cunningham and James McDaid were best for the reserves.

In the senior game the Glen played some great football especially in defence and went in at the break trailing by two points. In the second half both teams missed some very easy chances and Glenswilly can count themselves unlucky not to get something out of this game. In the end Naomh Conaill will be happy with the points but with so many injuries the young Glen team can take some heart out of the fact that if they had taken their chances the game would have over at half time. Final score was Naomh Conaill 0-7 Glenswilly 0-5.

July 19th

The re-opening of the pitch in Burt which was in brilliant condition did not inspire the home team in this intermediate championship game. Glenswilly always looked in control playing into a strong breeze in the first half G McGrenra opened the scoring in the first minute with a fine free. Enda Mc Dermot replied with a good score and himself and Shane McDaid added further points to make the score 4 points to 3 at half-time.

In the second half Neil Gallagher and Ciaran Bonner dominated mid-field and Gary McFadden took some fine scores the best of these being a great goal scored on 42 minutes. Darren McGinley added another goal on 56minutes to seal the victory. Burt did score a late goal from the impressive Shane McDaid but it was too little to late. Burt were missing a few players through injury and surely they will be hoping to improve in the next leg, but it will be Francie Martin’s Glenswilly team that will be the favourites to progress to the next round. Glenswilly 0-6 Naomh Conaill 1-19

The score line tells the story of this one-sided affair in Pairc Naomh Columba, Foxhall on Sunday. A strong Glenties side with the influential John Gildea and man of the match Johnny Mc Loone in fine form out played the Glenswilly men in all departments.Glenswilly were always going to be struggling with Ciaran Bonner and Neil Gallagher out (injured) and county minor Gary Mc Fadden unavailable for selection, Manager Francie Martin knew it was going to be a tough task to get anything out of this match.

Naomh Conaill started the scoring after only two minutes with Leonard Mc Dyre scoring a fine point and then Johnny Mc Loone ran half the pitch to rattle the net with a great shot, Glenswilly then had a chance of a goal with Darren Mc Ginley straight through only to see his shot blocked by a Naomh Conaill defender. It took the Glen men 18 minutes to register their first score through Geard Mc Grenra but by that stage they were trailing by 1-4. Another couple of scores from Anthony Thomson and Johnny Mc Loone left the half time score 1-9 to 0-1.

Two points From Geard Mc Grenra and Daniel Gallagher lifted the Glenswilly boy’s spirits but more scores from Aron Thomson and Dominic Bonner put the game out of reach. Ten minutes into the second half Glenswilly were down to fourteen men when Captain Martin Mc Ginley was sent off for an off the ball incident with John Gildea who was booked. This was the final nail in the coffin for the Glen and it was a damage limitation effort from then on. The final score read Glenswilly 0-6 Naomh Conaill 1-19.
