The CN Tower

CN Tower

The Canadian National Tower is the World's tallest free standing building soaring at 553.33m or 1,815'5'' high. It took approximately 40 months to construct and is now owned by the TrizecHahn Corporation. It was opened in June 26, 1976 and was originally designed for communication purposes only, to overcome the problem of poor telecommunications in the area. Development of many high rise skyscrapers and buildings in the 60's disrupted the flow of communication waves. The CN Tower was built to rise above the high rise hurdles and provide a more receptive area.

CN Tower - glass floor and my feet! TrizecHahn spent in excess of $26million in 1998 developing the tower and surrounding land into a tourist site. It is as a tourist attraction that it is more commonly recognised as across the globe. It provides a rotating restaurant called "360", an Observation Deck with glass floors (at 350m), and the World's highest observation Sky Pod (447m up) with awesome views over the city. On average, it attracts over 1.5 million visitors a year.

This is probably Canada's most famous tourist attraction. A visit to Toronto would not be the same without a trip to this must-see attraction. It's so cheap and great fun. It's been renovated since I went there in 1998, having had a major refit to the immediate surrounding area to enhance its tourist appeal. Stepping over the glass floors isn't for the faint hearted, but be gauranteed, millions before you have walked over them and survived to tell the tale and show off the same photo as me I'm sure! You can also walk around at the top of the tower, viewing a 360 degree perspective of the City and it's surroundings. This is an incredibly impressive sight. And for those of you that just want to go one better, there's the option of taking a lift upto the next level - the Sky Pod - which you can just make out in the photo on the left (small pod above the main central viewing station).
