The White Star

My Bonny Lad

words and music by Elizaveta Arievna Lebedeva

My bonny lad of clear blue eyes
I met him on a summer's day
He wiped the teardrops from mine eyes
And gently chased my cares away

I saw him first across a fire
And could not tear mine eyes from his
I knew right then I'd never tire
Of waking in those arms of his

But long time passed without a word
I thought he'd found another lass
I weeped alone but no one heard
I waited for the pain to pass

The days were months, the months were years
And not a word we'd spoken since
My hopes had given way to fears
I thought he'd never be my prince

But then there came a summer's day
I saw him 'cross a field again
I couldn't think of what to say
But how our eyes they met again

I didn't even know his name
And yet I knew that he was mine
I thought I'd try to play the game
I asked him if he'd share his wine

But then he took my breath away
He smiled and took me by the hand
I wondered if this time he'd stay
But tried to press forth no demands

He handed me a deep red rose
Said he had known that there we'd meet
And in my cheeks the color rose
As he did serenade me sweet

And now I pray he'll never leave
But wake each morn right by my side
A precious life it is we'll lead
For he asked me to be his bride

My bonny lad of clear blue eyes
I met him on a summer's day
We wiped the teardrops from our eyes
And love did chase our cares away
