We're Getting Older!....Well, a little

I, Laura A., being of questionably sound mind and mammarily-challenged body, have finally begun to deal with the long-standing issue of being a teen vs. being an adult, and wanting the best of both worlds. I'm still not ready to turn 18, but someone from another system suggested turning 17 1/2, and we said, "We never thought of that!" So 17 1/2 it is. And when I age, Rachel ages--loyal friend that she is, hehehehe--so we stay together. Pretty cool, huh?

WHO WE ARE, AND WHY WE'RE HERE

Laura

(My story in its original form)

Howdy...I'm Laura, the resident cynic of our system. I'm the one who got us through childhood and adolescence with our sanity intact (though some may say otherwise). See, I was always taking on more worries as we grew older, and outside adults always used to say I was like a little old lady, "(age) going on forty."

Mine was a world where little around me made sense, so when I was nine, Rachel appeared inside to help explain things to me. Back then, her name was Narrator, and her function was to interpret reality so that I/we could survive. If we could survive until adulthood, we'd be okay.

The adulthood I envisioned was one of liberation, sort of a parole for good behavior in the prison that was youth. I longed to grow up so I could get married and finally have someone take care of me. I couldn't wait to be an adult, but when I turned seventeen, I realized I'd never gotten to be much of a kid. Getting a job, having my own home, and all that other stuff that was supposed to liberate me was really just more responsibility. Seventeen began to look pretty good by comparison, so I remained there while the body moved forward. Adulthood? As far as I was concerned, the adults could have it. I was staying put.

To be more specific, I stayed there and moped. And whined and complained and wrapped myself in a cloak of resentment that kept the rest of the world away, thereby deflecting any chance of letting happiness in. I remained this way for the first twelve to fifteen years of the body's adulthood. Running, hiding from the chaos I felt around me, the Chaos I'd become.

The turning point came in 1996 when we finally realized we were a system, an inside family, each with our own tastes and talents and struggles and needs. I fought to come out and be recognized; my ability to "forge ahead" helped me to make the progress I so desperately needed toward happiness.

While I'm not Chaos anymore, and Charity says I've made more progress than just about anyone inside, life is still a challenge for me. Being the leader (with Rachel's help) for eight* other insiders is a job I approach with mixed feelings--those eight* insiders are parts of me, but I don't know how I can handle them all. If you have any good sugesstions, I'd love to hear from you.

Vaya con huevos,
Laura

(*Increased to nine as of 3/98)

Rachel

Hi! Laura's already told you about me, so I won't take up your time repeating what's already been said. I will tell you a little about our relationship. (Maybe if I tell it well enough, they'll find a gif of me. :-)

I am the sister, confidant, and best friend that Laura never had in the outside world. I know that sometimes Laura wonders why I've stuck around for so long, but I'll tell you a secret. Laura underestimates herself. All her talk about being the kind of person nobody sane would put up with....well, that's simply not true. Sisters are forever.

And with my help, Laura will learn how to handle what life has in store for her. She'll be able to love our littles and guide our teens without struggle. And she'll see herself with all the good that she really is.

Peace be with you,
Rachel
