Experts agree that the best way to start rebuilding the Indian society is through education of under-privileged masses, and, in particular, of under-privileged children. What is, perhaps, less recognized is the fact that there is grave ignorance in India, in the field of quality Early Childhood Education.
At Gram-Mangal, a 20-year old, non-Governmental, nonprofit organization in Maharashtra, we are determined to change that. In addition to our main focus, of bringing Quality Elementary Education to the doorsteps of tribal and rural children, we have committed ourselves to revolutionizing the childhood education system itself, in rural and urban areas alike.
We have developed a non-formal child education system that is consistent with methodologies designed by child education experts worldwide, and that, at the same time, keeps our children in close touch with our community, society, and the environment.
Organizations such as UNICEF-India, Times of India Foundation, ICICI, and the GIVE Foundation have given us their approval and encouragement, by supporting us. Recently, in 2003, we were honored to receive the prestigious Fr. Maschio Memorial Lifetime award "in recognition of the excellent work done towards the education of tribal children, using innovative teaching methods". Earlier recipients of the award include prominent social workers such as Baba Amte and Mother Teresa.
However, with severely limited resources, we are currently able to serve only a tiny fraction of the population. To be able to make a significant impact, we need involvement from you, the Indian community.
Through Gram-Mangal, you can contribute towards making tomorrow's generations mentally and physically healthy, so that they can grow to be independent, responsible adults. It is one more step towards the one goal that we all share: making a bit of a difference.
