Praxis

This flyer was printed in 1923. We have yet to learn. No More War Day

"fight with love, laugh with rage." a. d.

We must think. We must act. We must listen. For no other reason, than if we do not, we die.

You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
You shall not abuse any widow or orphan. If you do abuse them, when they cry out to me,
I will surely heed their cry; my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword,
and your wives shall become widows and your children orphans.
Exodus 22:21-24

Karl Marx popularized the term praxis: the combination of action and reflection.
Paulo Freire says this: "When praxis is deprived of its dimension of action, reflection
automatically suffers as well; and praxis is changed into idle chatter, into verbalism,
into an alienated and alienating 'blah'... On the other hand, if action is emphasized exlusively,
to the detriment of reflection, praxis is converted into activism" (pg 68-69,
Pedagogy of the Oppressed)

You've Got Questions... We've Got Answers is an educational packet I wrote a few years ago. I believe it to be a thorough resource for both the first-time explorer and the veteran queer-theorist. Tolerance is not enough to end violence, we must understand each other. In order to do that, we must talk to each other; we must speak the same language. Everyone is welcome to print and use this resource.

In Spring of 1998, Vassar College's GSA created a new Freshman Orientation event called: Big Gay Al's Big Gay Gameshow (BGA). It was the reinvention of an earlier "gameshow" called: "Guess the Gay." BGA had two performances while I was at Vassar and proved itself an effective introduction and an encouraging welcome for those already in the queer community. I admit to having had a over-zealous investment in this project. Wonderful GSA'ers helped me break free last year as the program continued to evolve at VC: the latest version titled: "Gays of Our Lives: Big Gay Al's Identity Crisis."

From October 2000 to May 2001, I worked at First Congregational Church of Somerville. Co-sponsered by the local church and the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ, I investigated the question: "Why aren't young adult--roughly ages 18-35--coming to church? In an effort to get a little deeper than "They don't want to" I began work. While the work has really only just begun, to sum up the initial year, I have put together a final report. Young Adult Ministry: A report

Part of action and reflection, for me anyway, is play. Especially when get older we forget about play and how important it is to just relax. Nearly every Palm Sunday I'm always thrilled because people are given toys for Sunday morning worship. You know it's true. Once you get that palm in your hand, you can't stop playing with it. Here's a fun thing to do with the palms. This is a fun project for a children sermon or during coffee hour. How to make a Cross out of a Palm

I hope you enjoy all three projects. If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, criticisms, please email me at: gmorisse@hds.harvard.edu
