For grade 5 to grade 8 students who want to
start learning German but do not have any previous schooling or knowledge
we offer this special course:
Beginner 1 and 2
This 1 - 2 year introductory course is geared
towards students between the ages of 10 and 13.
Its purpose is to enable students to blend
into the mainstream of the German Language School without having to start
at the grade 1 level.
Emphasis is placed on providing a vocabulary
foundation upon which sentence structure and grammatical basic concepts
are built. The main focus is on speaking and pronouniation in communicating
with confidence.
Text and workbook: Pingpong
Prerequisite: a desire to learn German
With the transition into another school (Grand
River Collegiate) we also start to make a clearer distinction between the
two streams, English and German, by starting in different programs.
The English stream starts with the “Pingpong
Neu” program which is written to adress the needs of students who do not
have a significant background in German at home.
The German stream starts with the “Passwort
Deutsch” program which continues to build on their knowledge of German.
English stream courses:
grades 6, 7, 8.
At this level we start to differentiate between
the two streams.
In the English stream we start with a new program,
Pingpong Neu, which reintroduces and reinforces the past years’ achievement
and progresses from there.
The emphasis of this course is on conversational
German as well as the written language, learning vocabulary as well as
grammatical concepts.
Language communication skills are strengthened
through dialogues, journals, independant projects and extra reading.
The course also fosters understanding of the
geography and culture of the German-speaking countries through their literature
and customs. These outcomes are achieved by the use of various media such
as audio-cassettes, videos (Pingpong, Hallo aus Berlin), poetry and written
texts.
This program prepares the students for the
high school credit courses in the English stream starting with LWG BDI,
which they take when in grade 9.
Text and workbook: Ping Pong Neu 1, 2, 3
Prerequisite: grade 5, 6, 7 English stream
or the approval of the administration
German stream courses:
grades 6, 7, 8.
An exciting brand new program which continues
to build on the already existing knowledge of German from home and school.
It focuses on the progression of all 4 language
abilities: understanding, speaking (role playing, presentation), reading
(more complex sentence structures) and writing (more formal grammatical
structures).
Its cultural activities are placed in all German-speaking
countries. Classes are conducted in German and explanations and activities
aim at using only the target language.
At the end of this program in grade 8, the
students will be very able to continue to the German stream credit course:
LWA ADI (grade 9) which leads to the “Zertifikat Deutsch” of the German
gov’t in grade 10 and then progress within their credit courses to the
“Diplom I and II” in grades 11 and 12.
Text and workbook: Passwort Deutsch 1, 2, 3
Prerequisite: grade 5, 6, 7 German or the approval
of the administration
