George Starostin's Reviews

My Crazy Reader Comments Statistics

(errr... 'crazy statistics', not 'crazy comments' or 'crazy reader', although certainly every reader
visiting this page must be just as crazy as its author)

I just decided to put up this page during a moment of boredom. It just occurred to me, though, that it might also be useful: if I have the strength and time to mark all the recently added comments here, it might be easier for my constant readers (God protect their soul and strengthen their body) to check them out. After all, if I have set up a page of new review additions, why shouldn't I put up a page with 'new reader comments'? So, starting with today - August 16, 1999 - I will try to diligently mark all the recent commentaries in their little cells.
The table below is easy to understand. 'Information' is comments whose main purpose is to communicate a detail I haven't mentioned; 'agreement' and 'disagreement' is elementary; and 'neutrality' is either a comment where 'agreement' and 'disagreement' are in equal proportions or a comment on some specific feature of the album/band/artist that has nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Also, note that the grouping is approximate: there are comments that are both 'informative' and 'agreement', or both 'informative' and 'disagreement', etc. Finally, I judge the 'nature' of the comments by the way I relate to them: I judge a comment as 'agreement' not when you agree with me, but when I agree with you. Just because it is easier for me to judge my mind than it is to judge yours, right? And, of course, the fact that you rate an album 8 when I rate it 9 or 7 doesn't necessarily mean 'disagreement'; if it did, there would probably be almost no 'agreeable' comments at all. I'm only speaking of serious differences in ideology. Finally, numerous comments by one person to one review only count as one, in order to avoid provocations.

Hmm. Well, turns out that I am still loved more than I am hated. I'm all over my head!!! It's interesting that people usually tend to agree about the Beatles and the Who, but tend to disagree about Yes, ABBA (the latter doesn't count, though, as it's still just one person) and my musical creed. But why should that surprise me? That was perfectly expectable. After all, I usually praise the Beatles and the Who, but bash Yes. I also bash quite a lot of ABBA, so don't think of me as of some kind of dumbass Europop freak!!!! And as for my musical creed, well, it's just here to tickle your nerves some. Ha Ha Ha.

Anyway, here is the readers' Hall of Fame. There's only 10 participants allowed, so if you wish to make it, you gotta beat the others - as for today, you have to mail at least 13 reader comments on 13 different albums/general band characteristics, etc.

Number Name Comments Information
1 Ben Greenstein 191 If you manage to find a comment where Ben completely agrees with me, you're lucky. We seem to have been born upon this Earth with one simple purpose - to disagree with each other. The only difference between us is that I have a record review site and he doesn't have one! Hee hee hee! Actually, that's not quite true, you can see some of his reviews at the Mark Prindle site (Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and others). The funny thing is, I tend to agree with his reviews while he never agrees with mine - what is this, a plot? Although Ben does have some strange tastes (c'mon, Sting? He likes Sting and hates Beggar's Banquet? Okay, okay, I'm shutting down...)
2 Bob Josef 189 Some informative and hard-hitting comments from a guy who's obviously done his progressive rock homework better than poor little me. He often presents an interesting and deserving alternate view on these albums - and does so while being cool-headed and polite, without so much foolish ardency that often characterizes prog fans.
3 Rich Bunnell 128 Rich is more of a 'modernistic' fan, with a strong passion for 80's/90's synth- and not-so-synth-pop (the 'classic' synth-pop, of course, if ever there is such a thing! Anyway, check his reviews at the Mark Prindle site, they're definitely worth a look), but he has an interest in dinosaurism as well. Moreover, he tends to agree with me most of the time! You don't know how good it feels when someone agrees with you! Way to go, Rich!
4 Glenn Wiener 119 Glenn is one of my most polite and accurate commentators, so I'm kinda flattered. He also seems to be a great fan of what some would call 'roots rock' - all kinds of blues-, country- and folk-rock, which is actually a good thing. One has to be closer to the Earth, is what I say. I like all these genres too, but probably not as passionately. But when you see a positive comment by Glenn, reader, know that this album is indeed it - the Salt of the Earth! (Of course, in case I also like the album. Hah hah).
5 Philip Maddox 103 A great friendly guy, objective and cool-headed, which is an immeasurable value all by itself. You may also read some of his reviews at the Nick Karn site (Music Junkies Anonymous). And... what else? Just read some of his comments and draw your conclusions for yourself. What am I, a shrink?
6 Jeff Blehar 90 For the defense: Jeff's comments are long-winded, fun to read, intelligent, and display great wisdom and knowledge of the subject. For the prosecution: Jeff sometimes reminds me of my dear friend Mr Greenstein in that he has way too many ununderstandable biases and completely ununderstandable allergies on solid musical material. Judgement: endorse all of his Pros, as they're beautiful, but take his Cons with a grain of salt - I'm still baffled by most of these.
7 John McFerrin 89 Ooh, that's a long story. We started out as almost enemies (check out the Moody Blues reviews on the Mark Prindle site for that), only to find out that the only difference between us is that John hated Disraeli Gears (he doesn't any more) and I hate Yes. We tend to agree on most other things. John is really more into the artsy, progressive bands, and he's got a review site of his own, too - check it out from my links page.
8 Richard C. Dickison 78 Dick is a great guy. He's always complaining about my not covering more modern bands, but after all, he's only right. Otherwise, his tastes match mine quite fine, and he's got a clear head and excellent writing style. Be sure to check out all his remarks.
9 Fredrik Tydal 75 A great.friendly guy from Sweden (yeah, that's where ABBA come from, too!). Hates prog rock and loves all kinds of psychedelic and rootsy music. Love him for the latter and close my eyes on the former - after all, nobody asks one to be an eclecticist all the time.
10 Simon Hearn 64 Simon has one of the biggest record collections in existence, which is good, and is probably the world's biggest R.E.M. fan, which is not necessarily good, but not necessarily bad either. How should I know? Also, he's the only guy I know who appreciates Clapton's Unplugged as much as I do. True good taste will never die, I say!
