History
The production started in 1983 with the 110 models, the 90 models followed in 1984. These models were developed from the Stage-1 which had introduced the flat front, this was now established as the Landrover look.

Land Rover utilised developments pioneered on the Range Rover with the introduction of a chassis that gave massive axle articulation and using long-travel coil spring suspension. Full time 4-wheel drive with lockable centre differential is standard and PAS became an option extra. The vehicle has proved to have excellent approach, departure and ramp break-over angles making it a very capable off-road vehicle.

Early models continued to have diagonal sliding windows and separate door tops of the Series III. Theses were replaced with winding handle type windows and one-piece door tops in 1987.

The interior continued to be van like; the Country Station Wagons were a little more refined with their higher specifications including soundproofing and a car-like trim. These Station Wagons could accommodate either seven passengers in the 90 or 12 passengers in the 110. However, the 12-seater model was more accurately a 10-seater and was sold as such outside the UK.

The 2.5l engines replaced the 2.25 engines in 1985 just ahead of the introduction of the V8. The V8 engine came straight from the Range Rover but was detuned, this engine proved very popular in the USA.

The vehicle was re-branded in 1990 becoming the Defender when the 200Tdi engine was introduced.
